mrsronweasley: (MacEmm's tulip)

(no subject)

I just had to share my excitement. Someone that I 'met' today - named Tori - wrote an entry that I not only agree with a hundred percent, but that also quotes one of my favorite MacMurrough lines in its subject. I mean, fucking hell. I saw that and my jaw dropped. And it made me so very very happy.

See? MacMurrough fucking RULES. *sigh*

Hence, the icon...

Night!

Two Liz's? I don't know whether to be really pleased, or really afraid...

I was talking with [livejournal.com profile] padawan_aisling just a minute ago on the phone. She's reading the book at the moment (has about 40 pages left) and she absolutley loves McEmm. I think she might be one of the only McEmm/Doyler shipper around.

In my opinion McEmm and Doyler have the classical seme/seme problem. They are both tops, who only want to be topped by someone they love (Jim) and who see being the bottom as a defeat, if it's done by somebody they don't love with all their heart. (See the scene where Jim is already in Dublin and McEmm and Doyler sleep with each other...)

Maybe that's all bollocks what I'm talking here... *scratches head*

Excellent taste in music, m'dear.

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Hmmm... I don't know. I don't think it really has to do with the sexual side so much as the emotional - and the proud. They are both proud, in different ways. In that scene when Jim's away, I think MacEmm could simply sense that Doyler hadn't quite forgiven him and knew that he might exact punishment, in his own way. I think it's a bit more complicated than the seme/seme problem... MacEmm, in fact, I don't think is a top, actually. I think he goes for anything, frankly, and doesn't care if he's a top or bottom. He did enjoy himself, in the end, didn't he? I don't know... I just can't see it as a top problem, though they are very similar and Doyler doesn't want to admit that. Heh.

Why, thank you! :-D

[identity profile] lea-ndra.livejournal.com 2003-07-11 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
*lol* yes, apparently he did enjoy it. I mean, he even told that sergeant before he hit him into the face, "look at that boy over there, isn't he handsome? he fucked me last night and it was glorious..." (or something like that).

of course you're right and it's a bit more complicated, but then the relationship between MacEmm and Doyler is the most complicated in the book...

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-11 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
Hehe, I loved that. "The sargeant followed the thrust of the conversation but poorly." The thrust of the conversation, indeed.

They do have a rather complicated relationship. Willful misunderstanding, communication problems, their love for the same person... *sigh* I love them so.

LOL! Thanks! I can't tell you how excited I am to have met you, either. The very simple fact that you agree with my entry and know where its subject comes from speaks absolutely HUGE volumes about you. Huge.

And MacEmm does rule. My friend [livejournal.com profile] toithaka is just about to be finished with the book. It's taken her several weeks to read (with good reason; her reading was interrupted by the release of OotP), and it was just painful to hear her rant about how much she disliked MacMurrough at the beginning (she's seen the light by now, though ;). I'm never really sure whether he is my favorite character or Doyler is . . . you and [livejournal.com profile] lea_ndra are right; both of them are so complicated, have so many different facets to them . . . it's perhaps why I am so crazy about both of them.

And oh my GOD I really fucking love your icon.

Ditto.

Oh, hearing MacEmm being put down hurts like hell. He is... I don't know. I can't fully explain what he means to me. I really am in love with him. It's so strange to say it about a fictional character, but he... he... the reason I can't fully explain it is because it's gone beyond the rational and there are no words to describe what he means to me. All of him, the good, the bad, and the Irish. If ever I met somebody like him I would fall for him. It wouldn't be happy - he'd be gay - but just...my God. Yeah. I'm glad she's seen the light. Very very glad.

I love both Jim and Doyler as well, of course. You can't NOT love them, they're just so beautiful.

And I forgot to mention this - I adore your wallpaper. When I get a computer of my own next month, do you mind if I filch it? It's absolutely breathtaking.

Wanna hear about that icon? It's a picture I took while in Dublin. [livejournal.com profile] jadis31 and I saw that bed of tulips in St. Stephen's Green and our jaws dropped. There was MacEmm's tulip, shining red among the yellows. It was perfect.

You know, I'll admit that I wasn't crazy about MacMurrough in the beginning. When he first appears in the book, pretty much all you can see is this self-loathing he feels, so it's not a surprise that I had to listen to my friend getting frustrated at him. But it's the amazing, spectacular, complete metamorphosis you see in him throughout the book that really gets me; the realization that he is so amazing, so completely . . . yeah, I'll go as wordless as you about this right about now. It also says a great deal about O'Neill's writing prowess that he can write such a transformation into a character and make it so believable that . . . God, you feel like you know all three of them, don't you?

I adore your wallpaper. When I get a computer of my own next month, do you mind if I filch it? It's absolutely breathtaking.

Are you kidding?! Of course I don't mind! You'll have to let me know if it fits your screen--it's formatted for my computer, a widescreen Mac, so it may be a bit too wide, but that is easily fixed. :)

And your tulip story . . . that is . . . amazing. I . . . wow. Seriously. Wow.

You know, I'll admit that I wasn't crazy about MacMurrough in the beginning.

That's the beauty of it, isn't it? Actually, I don't remember ever hating him. I remember being confused, but his voices intrigued me, rather than putting me off. They just made sense to me (which is rather frightening, I admit). And then he just... it's not even that he transforms... I feel like he just finally finds that part of himself that was missing. He incorporates Scrotes into himself, his conscience, he learns to accept his flaws, moreover - he stops thinking of himself as a sinner. The passage closer to the end when he thinks about Jim, and says "for live as angels among the Sodomites" just GETS to me. It gets to me, it is so beautiful, so poignant, it makes me cry like few things can. It makes me believe in people, even. That's why I love him, at least partly. He is just such an amazing person, such an amazing character. Flawed but in the way that he thinks. Beautiful in a way he doesn't realize. God, I could go on and on...

And yes, the writing. My God. You DO feel like you know them, and the more you read it, the better you love them. They are real, fleshed-out characters. I can't find flaw with this writing. It's simply astounding.

And I will definitely let you know what formatting I will need! Wheee!

That story makes me very happy, too, to this day...

He incorporates Scrotes into himself, his conscience, he learns to accept his flaws, moreover - he stops thinking of himself as a sinner.

That is one of my favorite passages in the book--his last conversation with Scrotes. It's so powerful . . . when Scrotes says "For only with pride may a man prosper. With pride, all things follow. Without he have pride he is a shadowy skulk whose season is night." . . . that's the definitive moment at which I knew I loved MacEmm. Flawed as he may be, because that's what makes him--and Jim, and Doyler--so believable; as you said, they're all so beautiful but they have problems and shortcomings as we all have. And all three are so strong in the face of adversity . . . it's an enormous inspiration to me.

I could go on forever, too . . . Which, actually, FYI--I am toriloveseggs on Y!M if you ever feel like talking outside of LJ comments. :)
