The Shrieking Shack scene.

I wanted to say that I refuse to get into wars about this. I know that the casting that was done has left few stones unturned, people hate it, people love it, people just don't give a shit, and it's all fine. I don't like the fact that people are getting attacked because of it, directly or indirectly. I think that we can all safely post our opinions, and they will be valid because they're opinions. You can love the picture, you can hate it. It doesn't really matter, does it?

I love the atmosphere in it. And I'm hopeful that Cuaron has done a good job with it. I'm very excited that it's there. (I know it was supposed to be, but you know what I mean. Who the hell knows anymore.) I'm VERY excited about the fact that the first publicity shot we get IS the Shrieking Shack scene, because it's such a vital scene, and it effected everybody. I hope, for the sake of the book, they got it right. I remember reading it the first time with my mouth hanging open. Literally. (And I always use that word carefully because it's been misused often. But yes, my mouth WAS open.) It was perfectly done, and it was one of the most moving scenes I'd ever read. So. I hope to god they got it right.

As for the casting - the only problem I have with this picture is that it looks like Thewlis has a mustache, and I hope to God he doesn't actually have one, because then I will get really upset. Facial hair on Sirius makes total sense to me, and, in fact, I've always been confused why we'd never heard of his beard - I mean, he couldn't exactly shave in prison, could he? But I hate mustaches. So, yes, this is a personal preference. I cannot imagine Remus with a mustache. They've always seemed slimy to me, a la Burt Reynolds. Or, hell, a la the 70's. Yikes.

I'm also curious as to why Hermione is looking all pissed off in Ron' direction, but I'm guessing we have one Scabbers on his knees. Heh. Oooo... I do wonder what Peter will look like...

In short, wow. We have our first publicity shot.

EDITED TO SAY:

Excuse me. SHOTS.

And I lied. I do have another problem with this. The slumped way Lupin is looking. I hope it's just a momentary thing, and will look much different in the whole scene. Because that isn't quite the Lupin from the Shrieking Shack scene, and we all know it. He wasn't slumping, he was too busy pacing up and down and then restraining Sirius. He didn't have time to slump against the wall. He was a bit busy, you know?

Where are they? Where are the shots? TLC?

*runs off to look*

[identity profile] simster.livejournal.com 2003-07-28 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Just saw the the shot you're referring to. I agree about Lupin. I hope that's not a mustache. What's with the tattoos on Oldman's chest? Did I miss something?

[personal profile] moony 2003-07-28 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)

I just don't think there's any point in analyzing it. I've seen too many stills that never end up in the final product. This may have been a moment just before the director called for 'action,' or it may have been just after a take. We don't know. That's the point: we don't know.

It just seems useless to me to try and judge an entire film (and, in Thewlis's case, an entire performance) from one blurry photograph. I certainly can't write him off because of that, and I don't understand how other people (not necessarily you) can.

In that respect, I recommend renting Besieged. Good Thewlis.

[identity profile] mkholmquist.livejournal.com 2003-07-28 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think we can judge Thewlis on this grainy little pic. Here he looks like the principal from Ferris Bueller's Day Off and that can't be right. I'll just keep my fingers crossed for the film.

Did you read the MSN article and listened to the audio interview about hormones, emblematic political resemblances, and rebelliousness? Sounds like PoA, if anything, will definitely be interesting to watch.

[identity profile] croupier.livejournal.com 2003-07-28 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well. That stuff looks cool.
As for Thewlis, if he bugs, just lie back and think of England Ralph Fiennes, darling. Just lie back and think of Ralph.

(And, while you're pretending, pretend I'm saying something else clever here.)

[identity profile] soupytwist.livejournal.com 2003-07-28 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I share your antipathy to moustaches (EWW how much do I), but I must admit I didn't think Thewlis had one for a *minute* - that looks like shadow to me.

(Also, if he had one I would be beyond disapointed. Remus is not the kind of guy who'd have a tache. To a Brit, Remus having a tache makes a *hell* of a lot of difference - it would say Remus was an entirely different kind of guy. No way.)

I also agree with those who say that it's possible this isn't even from filming at all - we simply don't know, and I have hope that even if it is, the funny look on Thewlis' face is just a momentary thing.

Guess what? Still love you. :)

[identity profile] hildigunnur.livejournal.com 2003-07-28 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm pretty indifferent at the moment but still those pictures were interesting. Don't think Thewlis has a moustache though. *starts to think about the rude moustached guy that Elín and I met the other day* Yeah, I really don't think that it's a moustache.

As for Hermione's "pissed off" look ... I think it's Emma Watson's intense look ... she's always a bit over the top ... bless her.

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-28 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehe, actually you did. ;) Apparently, his chest is filled with them. Odd decision, but the tattoos actually look kind of interesting. The only thing I wonder if when he acquired them and why. Must have been bored one day. And hey, he had a bike - might as well go all out, eh? Heh.

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-28 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's why I said that I hope it's just a momentary lapse, of course. It's also that I know that the actors that do roles have often different visions of the characters than we do. Like, say, Rupert Grint. Or Richard Harris. It's a worry I always have with movies based on books (I know they won't, but if they ever made a movie out of 'At Swim' I would freak out, because I've seen the characters completely misinterpreted beyond recognition in various reviews and articles.) These things worry me because this particular character is - in case, er, anybody didn't already know - is so close to my heart in many ways. (He was the first character I actually loved in these books. For some reason, he just went: 'Hello there' and I was lost.) Obviously, I'm not judging anything right now - just looking and trying to convince myself not to condemn anything or anyone quite yet. (WHY isn't it going to be out this fall, WHYYYYYYYY...) I DO believe this movie has a very good shot at being MUCH better than the first three, because Cuaron and I seem to agree on a lot of things.

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-28 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Here he looks like the principal from Ferris Bueller's Day Off and that can't be right.

EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

YUCK!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! And that sucks doubly for me, because the principal from FB also looks like my high school choir director and that's just...the grossest thing I can imagine. EW. EWWWWWWW!!!!

I want to take a shower now. Ew.

I haven't had a chance to read the article yet, but I believe you - Cuaron's very cool. POA is in good hands, at least. Phew for that.

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-28 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Can I think of Ewan instead? I still say they should have gone with Linus Roache. Oh, well.

BTW, where you been? Missed you!

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-28 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, now I'm all curious. What would the mustache mean? Is it really bad? Tell me!

And no, I'm not judging anything yet. I'm just...commenting. Which, you know... I kind of hope I can here.

I know. ;)

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-28 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope to God it's a shadow. Yeargh.

Hehe, yeah, I think you might be right. I hope Cuaron is a better director for actors than Columbus was. No more supah-cool-hero!Harry, please!

[identity profile] croupier.livejournal.com 2003-07-28 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I have been packing up a bunch of stuff and doing a lot of random crap to help Andy out and spray-painting furniture and praying a lot and generally running around like Granger on speed. (And if the phrase "Granger on speed" doesn't make you happy, I don't know what will.)

I do want to say that, from the shots I've seen, this film looks a lot more funky and earthy and natural and less stylized--dare I say, it looks DIRRTY? DIRRTY! Although I do really fucking miss the uniforms. I hope they'll be in other scenes. DIRRTY!

I cannot WAIT until I get my coherence back. SERENITY NOW!!!!

[identity profile] soupytwist.livejournal.com 2003-07-28 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The tache would indicate either 1. way, way posher than Remus is, or 2. camp and smarmy paedo cyclist. So yeah, bad. Heh.

Funnily enough, as it's your journal, I think you can comment, yeah. :)

And still love you, just in case you were wondering. :D

[identity profile] therealmarajade.livejournal.com 2003-07-28 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to agree with Liz, Axelle. EWWWWWWWWW! Lupin canNOT look like Ferris Bueller's Principal!!!

EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!

Debora *worried sick about Remus*

[identity profile] immovablemover.livejournal.com 2003-07-28 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, you just rock. You picked out every comment I could possibly have made about this scene. I, too, hope they got that scene right. I have read PoA more than I've read the other four books combined--I've read the final few chapters even more times than that--sp I hope they got it right. [livejournal.com profile] cramberry27 was over here earlier and we were speculating re: Remus's mustache and slumped I-have-no-self-esteem posture (SO not Remus). Let's hope this shot is just a fluke in this regard. I also wish Sirius's hair was longer--I am seeing no evidence of an "elbow-length tangle"--but we'll see. I guess.

Anyway, anything else I would have to say--you've already said. Looking forward to more pics, though. I hope I can warm up to Oldman and Thewlis before the movie comes out.

[identity profile] aclockworkangel.livejournal.com 2003-07-28 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
SIRIUS HAS PRISON TATTOOS!!!

PRISON TATTOOS!!!

HOW FUCKING COOL IS THAT?!?

SQUEEEE!!

Okay, I'm done now. But seriously. That's fucking cool.

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-29 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you, Kramer. :-P

Dude, take care of yourself, ok? You'll be fine. Coherence is not required. It'll be over sooner or later. It'll be ok.

*HUGS*

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-29 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Ew, that's what I thought you were going to say. Yes, please, no pedophile Remus, thanks. UGH!

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-29 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you agree. It's just one of those 'man, I almost wish they didn't make the movie' things, you know? When you've loved characters for so long and seen them a certain way in your head, it's really hard to accept them in any other way. This is like defiling MacEmm for me. *sigh*

Oh, well. I haven't let the first two movies affect the way I see the books, so I won't let this one do that, either. In fact, I think it will be quite easy. Heh.

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-29 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
See, I don't think they're prison tattoos. They meant something else, though I can't remember what. Hmmm...

[identity profile] ex-rainy-day713.livejournal.com 2003-07-29 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
I think that we can all safely post our opinions, and they will be valid because they're opinions. You can love the picture, you can hate it. It doesn't really matter, does it?

Amen!

[identity profile] lost-lorelei.livejournal.com 2003-07-29 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
My main problem is that when I look at Thewlis I see Peter, not Remus. I think Oldman is going to be a perfect canon!Sirius, though. The other problem I have is that Thewlis and Gary don't look as good as they should together.

And I miss the robes. But that's it, I swear.

Well, not really: would you mind if add you to my friends list? I have just 2 r/s shippers as friends. :)

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-29 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
My main problem is that when I look at Thewlis I see Peter, not Remus.

I KNOW!!!

Exactly. He looks like a rat to me. He just does, and I can't help that. But he is just not Lupin. Not because I imagine Lupin as dropdead gorgeous (though I always have, and he had me at 'quiet!', anyway)

I miss the robes, too. *sigh*

And add away. :) Not a problem!

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-29 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't you love it when somebody begins a sentence and never finishes it because they have the attention span of Pigwidgeon? Yeah. As I was saying, not just because I imagine Remus was gorgeous, but because he just looks so slimey and un-Remus like! No matter if we agree on the 'gorgeous' part, we most certainly agree on the fact that Remus is not slimey, nor is he sleazy, nor is he ratty. You know?
