Dorkiest post possibly ever. Please swerve to avoid head-on collisions.
Whoo, voting today. \o/ At least the bitching won't be pointless, you know? I always get a bit of a high whenever I vote. It doesn't last long. But it feels damn good while it does.
So, like, a year ago, I discovered due South. (And I know this also applies to a few others, such as
shihadchick and
joandarck. Huge ♥ to you both.)
I'd heard about it before, from various people, such as
xjestx,
soupytwist,
everlastingwhy and
carleton97, but I never really pursued it, because it sounded weird. Also, I was losing interest in TV. And it took
mayatawi practically forcing me and
aneli8 to sit still and just WATCH, DAMMIT, WATCH.
Anna was very sleepy that night, because she was still jet-lagged from Europe (Christ, was it really over a year ago that we were all in Brighton, Edinburgh and Dublin? Wah!), so she wasn't paying as much attention as I was. And I was confused. I mean, I knew there were two Rays in this show, but what the HELL? Aren't they going to explain what's going on? Did he really have plastic surgery? What's HAPPENING? But, oh, look, cute doggy!
Then, they explained it. Good! Okay, now we're getting somewhere.
Then, came "Eclipse". Anna was pretty much asleep by that time. Suddenly,
mayatawi starts flailing around, going, "Oh, oh, wake her up, wake her up!" Knowing that she's just so tired, I went, "No, no, let her sleep, we'll show it again later."
On screen:
Ray: "Do you find me attractive?"
Me, flailing: "ANNA, WAKE THE FUCK UP, OH MY GOD, WAKE UP!"
The next day, R. came over to my place, and showed me "Asylum" ("Fraaseeeeeeeeeer!") and MotB. Now, I didn't know that MotB was a two-parter, and I had work the next day. So I said, "After this one, I have to sleep. Wah, I'm sorry."
"But, but! It's a two-parter!" R. flails.
"But, but, sleep! Wah!"
On screen:
Buddy Breathing: *happens*
Me: "OMG OKAY YOU WIN WE'LL WATCH THE REST. ...Does it get GAYER than this?.."
The next day, R. fucked off to Maryland, taking her tapes with her. WENCH. I cried, even while inhaling fic like it was heroin.
Two days later, Anna bought the DVDs and met me at my T stop. We went to my house and spent some quality time watching the DVDs. We were hooked, and we were damn fucking happy.
And then there were new and shiny people! And
ds_recs! And discovering
c_regalis through her "Purple Toast" picspam! (I remember this vividly, as it happened when Anna and I were in New Hampshire, having our marathon.) And finding new people all over the place! And a fangirly night at
mayatawi's, where we met
brooklinegirl for the very first time and watched a bunch of Callum clips, along Hard Core Logo without knowing ANYTHING ABOUT IT. Or how it ends. Or anything. Oh, man. Awesome times. Then, came Callum the Duck and the Flashcards, and...oh, man. I love this fandom.
It took me a long-ass time to work up to the nerves to actually write anything, though. The night I posted my first fic, Anna had to hold my hand over the phone, even after she beta-ed it.
"But what if they hate it, and I'm, like, ostracized from fandom! What if it sucks just that much!"
"It doesn't suck. Post it, woman. Or I'll do it FOR YOU."
"Meep! Okay. But if they hate it, it'll be ALL YOUR FAULT."
I actually closed my eyes when I hit post. /dork
In any case, what I am trying to say is, I can't believe it's been a year, as I still feel like the newbiest newbie of the newbs, but at the same time, it feels like so much longer than that. All in all, this is all GOOD. And wonderful.
And, just.
♥
:D
And I still have the Ray and Fraser stuffed dolls on my monitor, along with a zebra and a little rubber ducky from
con_txt hanging on my calendar. Yay.
And, seriously, how did I live without knowing that Callum Keith Rennie exists? Madness.
