Dear Lizka,
Well, this is you - from the future, which is why I'm writing in English. You see, you will actually be able to learn English! And you will finally understand everything that goes on around you (might not be a good thing, but at least you won't feel as silly) and you'll be able to read, no problem, and write and make jokes - all in English. It'll be great. But, no worries - you'll still speak Russian. Pover' mne, ego ne tak legko zabyt', hotia chitat' stanet trudnee. No, ne veshai golovu!
Middle school is horrible even if you can speak the language - trust me, everybody hated it.
Those girls that you're hanging out with now, you know, that little group of helpful people? You will have to make a choice in two years, and you will make the right one. You will get mad at how they treat this other girl you know, the one with the long blond hair, and you will stick with her. You won't be quite sure why, at first, because, after all, she's loud and opinionated, everything that you're not. But in a couple of years, when you will be able to talk to her about anything in the world, and after she has made you just as loud and just as opinionated, you will know why. Carrie is your best friend still, and you thank your lucky stars that you made that choice years ago. She's the best. And she loves Alan Rickman. Yes, he's the one in that Bryan Adams video - the really beautiful man with the beard? Yeah. When you're 20, you will get to actually touch him. Your knees will shake the entire time. (All thirty seconds.)
You will have a difficult time with your sister throughout the years. You are closer than ever now, and that will hinder things later, when she goes off to college. Yes, she will leave. The day that she moves out, you will trail after her like a puppy and cry. But it will be OK. She will eventually get married - and it will distance you from each other, but, again, it's all right. You will still be close...just not as close.
Your mom is cooler than you think. She will actually let you live with a future boyfriend of yours for an entire summer. (Yes, you will have boyfriends.)
That cute boy, Travis? The one who talks over the PA system in the morning, with the nice voice? He will be your first kiss in four years. He will also be clinically depressed, and you won't know what to do to help him. You two will break up after two months knowing it's the right thing to do.
He will not be your last boyfriend to be clinically depressed. Brace yourself. You will attract them like flies. Your sister will joke about you having something that makes "lost souls" come to you. It might be that, even loud and sarcastic, you will still remain "nice". Too sensitive, as some people would put it.
When you're fourteen, you will begin to notice that girls are very pretty. You will cry yourself to sleep for an entire summer. It's ok. It is perfectly fine to be attracted to them. But you won't understand that fully until you're in college.
You will get to live in New York, even if for a year. It will be cool - and very...enlightening.
You will find yourself inexplicably drawn to gay men. Your boyfriend will call you a "fag hag", eventually. You will agree.
You will continue to write - only...slightly differently from the way you originally intended it. You will love every minute of it, trust me.
Don't stop singing. Whatever you do. It'll help take the edge off.
Starting with Carrie and on you will continue making friends with the "weird" ones. Your future other best friend (you will call yourselves "The Three Musketeers", you, Carrie and her) will first strike you as extremely strange. She is. You'll fall in love with her.
An'ka will come to live in the states and your relationship with her will flourish. You won't believe that your oldest friend in the world is still your friend. Your friendship is going on 20 years now. Her brother's second baby will be a girl. They will name her after you, at An'ka's suggestion.
You'll drive. Whoa.
You won't miss home, Troitsk, as much anymore. In fact, this place where you are right now, that town, will become your home. You will miss it when you're gone.
Dad will never make much money, and it will cause problems, but you'll all be all right. You will all still have each other.
Don't be afraid of the different. The different will save you.
Take care, and stop crying,
Liz
