*DIES*
Hello Liz [Dead] (though I would much prefer to call you Yelizaveta, a
beautiful name, nearly a story itself), Thank you so much for your thoughts
on At Swim. It was very kind of you to write. When you've spent so long with
a story, with its characters, it can be hard to let go; an email such as
yours makes it all worthwhile, and I feel proud to have written what has
given enjoyment. Sometimes you can forget it's a book you've written, and in
the world of sales-figures and promotions, it becomes just a commodity --
not even yours, but your publishers'. There's a lot of my heart in that
book, and it's good for the soul to be reminded, as you have reminded me.
I'm particularly pleased, no relieved really, that you liked the character
MacMurrough. You wouldn't believe the nonsense I sometimes have to read
about him. I like the way he grows in the novel. He starts off solitary and
predatory, but by the end I think he's come to an understanding of himself
and the world. There's a phrase from André Gide which I like, to the effect
that our goal in life is to be able to love and be worthy of being loved.
That's MacMurrough's journey, I think.
Your picture is wonderful. This is crazy, I know, to pick on such a detail,
but I love the grain you have in the wood of the boards. I'd like if I may
to put it up on my website. This is up to you, of course, but I'd copyright
it for you and link it to yourself (if you wanted). Let me know what you
think. I wouldn't be putting it up for a while, anyway, as I'm off to
America next week, and I'm up to my neck in laundry and writing speeches and
being terrified and all that.
Thanks again for writing. My regards to you, Jamie.
