HMMMM. (mixed reaction.)
So, we went to see "Love & Other Drugs" yesterday.
Anne Hathaway sure looks pretty without any clothes on. Which, really, for me, was the highlight of the movie!
Okay, that isn't true: the highlight was RELATED, though, because this movie treated a sexual relationship between two adults like that is what they are: adults. In a sexual relationship. The sex itself was a big part of it, as was nudity. Actually, the reason we went to see it was the interview with Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal in EW where they talked about that, how in real life, you DON'T worry about where the sheet is placed after you've had sex, you've had SEX. You know? And you walk around naked without covering up, because YOU'VE. HAD. SEX.
So, that was REALLY well-done. And pleasing to the eye. Because I am a creep. (Also, the first sex scene was super hot. I mean, so were the others. But it was, like, HI THERE, AWESOME. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR WHAT YOU DID THERE, JAKE GYLLENHAAL AND ANNE HATHAWAY. *CLAPS*)
(OH, BUT. Okay, let me ask you this: is it weird that I expect people to focus more on oral than they do? At least than they do in movies? I mean, it's maybe that straight vs. not-straight relationship divide, but they kept FUCKING, and I'm, like, WHAT ABOUT BLOWJOBS. GO DOWN ON HER. JESUS, ADD SOME VARIETY HERE. (At least let her be on top, sir. O.o) I mean, finally, there was a "prelude to the oral" scene, but I was, like. IDK. EMBRACE IT. SEXUAL VARIETY IS GOOD TIMES. Why are blowjobs mostly the butt of sexist/homophobic jokes? It is a sad, sad world.)
(You know what was truly awesome? The whole thing was set in the 90's. I won't spoil the very first song you hear as the movie opens, but MAN, DID IT DATE ME. *chairdances*)
The actors were both good, despite the fact that I sometimes found them both vaguely annoying. He seemed a little too cartoony at certain times (but really managed to pull off a few GREAT scenes) and Anne Hathaway has never struck me as particularly tough, so it was a bit hard to take that seriously in the beginning. But she found her groove. Plus, those soulful eyes of hers and that SMILE. You can't resist. So, once the film got going, it was really great to see her. (Her VERY first scene, btw, was possibly my favorite with her. ♥)
I think what I'm looking for in a love story is never going to happen, or it will happen in a non-Hollywood film I'll never actually see. I want the dialogue not to be riddled with cliches. I want REAL people, not people who sound like exactly what I expect them to sound. If I can finish your sentence for you, this is a problem. And if I know that the old people on that bus will be all, "he's handsome!" when he pursues her at the end to try to win her back, SERIOUSLY, MAKE A DIFFERENT MOVIE.)
It was entertaining, and it was really moving at times. The cast was phenomenal - I mean, George Segal was there for five minutes, but he was GREAT. Oliver Platt was Oliver Platt, I fucking ADORE him. Hank Azaria was great, as always. Jill Clayburgh. ;________; Was also great. ;_____;
Oh, and the dude who played Jake Gyllenhaal's brother was SUPER GREAT. (AND he had the greatest line in the whole film. GEEK REFERENCES WILL GET YOU EVERYWHERE, SIR.) THAT was an interesting relationship, mostly because dude was so fucked up. They had great chemistry, and some of my favorite scenes were of them together.
WHAT ELSE. It was REALLY funny at times. Like, slap your knee and/or your forehead kind of funny, even if most of it revolved around dick humor. (You guys, I love me some good dick humor. This was pretty awesome dick humor. Because I'm a 12 year old boy.)
I think what annoyed me MOST was the ending. There is a trend I fucking HATE in Hollywood: the "You make me want to be a better man" trend. It's the trend where the lady in question doesn't get to be anything but that which makes the leading dude be/feel better about HIMSELF.
It wasn't as apparent in this movie at first, but then there were a few scenes where I went, "HMMMM" to myself and the ending, FORGET IT. :| HOLLYWOOD, YOU ARE ON NOTICE.
Here's a hint to everybody out there who is trying to convince somebody else to be with them: TALK ABOUT THE OTHER PERSON. IT SHOULDN'T BE ABOUT YOU FEELING BETTER ABOUT YOURSELF BECAUSE THE OTHER PERSON MADE YOU FIND YOUR INNER WHATEVER. It should be about how you can't live without this person because they are just that amazing. Seriously. IDK. It is SUPER annoying.
TELL HER SHE IS GREAT, YOU JACKASS. IT IS NOT ALL ABOUT YOU.
I mean, I get that it can be a part of it: this one person you meet makes you realize all these great things about yourself. It's a trip! Awesome! Now, how about giving something BACK. In the end, it was all about how she noticed in him what nobody else had.
:|
Okay? Is that enough to sustain a difficult relationship with somebody who will inevitably need you to help them piece their dignity together? (She's got early on-set Parkinson's, btw, did I not mention that?)
So, overall it was really enjoyable, if not, you know. Ground-breaking. (I have to tell you, though, I was half-expecting her to die in a freak accident, so I was VERY relieved that didn't happen.)
YOU GUYS, I JUST WANT TO SEE A LOVE STORY THAT HASN'T BEEN DONE A MILLION TIMES BEFORE. IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK? (I know, I know. SIGH.)
Oh, when you see it? (If you do?.) Be prepared to want Chinese food afterwards. At least, that's what happened to me and
brooklinegirl. We were thinking of either going to a nice bar afterwards, or just straight home, depending on how tired we were, then after we left the theater, we turned to each other and went, "...we could get Chinese?" AND IT WAS AWESOME, THE END.
