She's got Queer on her mind...

So, everybody should read what Alli says about stupid fuckwitted homophobes. She's brilliant.

In other thoughts, I want to ask a serious question.

How come no one ever knew George Michael was gay? I mean, it couldn't have taken a good gaydar to tell. Honestly. After WHAM! and the hot pants? Yeah.

Anyway.

Something kinda silly...

50) I spent the majority of my time naked from when I was 9 months old until I had to go to preschool.
49) While I was naked, an old lady once called me ‘a little boy’ and commended my parents’ decision to not coddle me because I would never get sick that way.
48) I didn’t begin getting sick until I was forced to put on clothes.
47) In Russia.
46) I spent 5 years playing the violin from the age of 6 and I sucked the entire time.
45) However, I did look adorable at recitals with my teeny violin and huge hair bows.
44) I was a fat baby and often looked like a hampster, but was still very cute.
43) To this day, people wonder what the hell happened.
42) I’m taller than my mom by one inch.
41) No one ever believes that, because she wisely wears heels all the time.
40) Up until I was ten-eleven, even though I had friends, I always felt like an outsider, observing through a glass wall.
39) My first day of school in America, I had a note written by my sister that I was to show to the first member of the faculty I saw. It said ‘Hi, I don’t speak English, can you please tell me where the ESL room is?’
38) It worked, but the rest of the day went downhill. I did make a friend, though.
37) When I was 13, I had a choice before me: choose to remain friends with a group of popular girls, or stay with one girl who had just been ‘kicked out’ of their group for being ‘weird’.
36) Not knowing why, I stayed with that girl. It’s been 8 years since then; her name was Carrie, and she’s visiting me in a couple of weeks.
35) That remains the proudest moment of my life.
34) My very first crush on an actor happened when I was five.
33) I used to look at k. d. lang and think: ‘If she was a man, I would really like her…’
32) I know better now.
31) I started reading ‘At Swim, Two Boys’ while sitting in Sam’s car, waiting for the laundry to get done.
30) It took me four hours to do laundry. Sam was ready to send out a search party for me.
29) I have crushes on cartoon characters.
28) For years, when I was little, I used to wake up before my sister, look over at her huddled under the blanket, see only her black hair, and imagine that she will wake up and not be my sister at all, but a witch.
27) I don’t know how to ride a bike.
26) I learned to swim only under the threat of failing GYM, in ninth grade.
25) I used to go a learning group that discussed ancient myths of the Egyptians and Greeks, when I was about 9.
24) I’ve only been on two real dates, both when I was 15.
23) The first time I heard of homosexuality, I was watching TV with my best friend and her mom, and they showed a picture of two naked extra-muscular men together. I was 10.
22) I was scared. Mostly because they were so muscular.
21) I was going to run away and hide in the woods while my family moved to America.
20) I wimped out.
19) I didn’t get my own room until I was 13.
18) I was afraid to go to bed at first after that.
17) The story that scared me the most when I was little, and that stills gives me the biggest creeps ever, is ‘The Speckled Band’, from Sherlock Holmes.
16) I checked rooms for any sorts of crevices for years.
15) If I was a teacher in Russia, my students would have to call me ‘Yelizaveta Yakovlevna’.
14) I used to actively avoid stepping on cracks. I stopped when I was about 16.
13) When I had to talk about my future career before entering high school, I said I wanted to teach French.
12) I hate French.
11) I sneeze really loudly.
10) My sneezes come in threes.
9) When I’m very drunk, I apparently snore.
8) I failed my first driver’s test, and the only thing I did perfectly on was the parallel parking.
7) I used to sell Cutco cutlery.
8) My first job was building a pavilion, cleaning out ditches, staining, pouring cement, taking care of walkways, when I was 14.
6) The only sport I ever actively engaged in was tennis, Freshman year of high school.
5) I was the worst one on the team.
4) My coach’s last name was ‘Schwartz’.
3) My prom date’s name was Greta, she wore flip-flops and a home made dress made out of patches. It wasn’t a real date, though. Damn.
2) I had crushes on girls for years without realizing what they meant.
1) I used to eat postcards as a child.

Not very interesting to read, but fun to write. What memes are all about.

The mind boggles that people actually did not know George Michael was gay. I cannot remember a time when I did not know this fact.

There was just something about him that was like...

Never mind. *laughing*

There was just something about him that was like...

...not straight? Yeah. Heh.

[identity profile] terredancer.livejournal.com 2003-07-16 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Like really not straight.

It surprised everyone but me. Now that was funny.

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-16 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL. Don't you love that sort of funny? ;)

[identity profile] miraminx.livejournal.com 2003-07-16 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Please. I knew George Michael was gay. For one thing, it's the only way to explain Andrew Ridgeley.

But then, there were people who thought the lead singer for Culture Club was female until they learned his name.

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-16 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course you did. I'm talking about the general populace, you see. I mean...SHOCKER! GEORGE MICHAEL COMES OUT!

What, officially?

Honestly.

Oh, Boy George... *tsk tsk tsk* People are dense, man.

[identity profile] miraminx.livejournal.com 2003-07-16 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Kind of like when k.d. lang came out. "What," I said, "she wasn't out already? Huh."

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-16 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, honestly! When DID she come out? It wasn't recently, was it?

[identity profile] newmaryjane.livejournal.com 2003-07-16 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh? I always knew he was gay. Weird.

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-16 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, remember the big bathroom incident? Like people didn't know before!

[identity profile] arborealis.livejournal.com 2003-07-16 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That was like the coolest meme ever. Thanks for that glimpse into your life. :-)

You should do this!

[livejournal.com profile] remuslover, that is the BEST icon I've ever seen.

Sorry for the spam, Liz. But it had to be said.

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-17 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
People WERE in denial! ;) He did have that gorgeous, gorgeous ass...

Ni, you must stop this or my head will grow so big, it'll be the size of Hogwarts. *loves you*

And it's ok, we'll talk soon! :-D

*MWAAAAAAAAAAH*

[identity profile] moeyknight.livejournal.com 2003-07-16 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I gotta tell you that I know all the signs were there but I was young and he shook that fine, fine, ass on stage. ::shrugs:: It was denial I know. He ROXED. :D

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-17 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, he did. And denial is very powerful when such an ass is before you.

[identity profile] themorningstarr.livejournal.com 2003-07-16 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I was never into George Michael enough to pay attention.

But I do have crushes on cartoon characters. And my first crush on anyone happened at age 5 as well.

His name was David... and he was a red head... ;)

And d00d, that was the coolest Meme ever. And I must say that my life sounds immensely boring compared to yours. Insert a pregnancy at age 16... (twins) and that's about all that'd be worth reading in mine...

[identity profile] croupier.livejournal.com 2003-07-16 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I was never into George Michael enough to pay attention.
TMS--I really liked him when I was six...then, at eighteen, I read that Joy Division's Closer was his fav album. I then re-evaluated "Father Figure" and went on to co-found the "George Michael Is Really Underrated" club. We currently have three members.
11) I sneeze really loudly.
Whenever I sneeze, my friend Briana arches her eyebrow and says, "That did not sound like a sneeze." Liz, take that as you will. (But I will tell you that I gasp a lot before the actual sneeze occurs and sigh when it is done. Even my boss agreed that no, it did not sound like a sneeze.)

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-17 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
YOU ORGASM WHEN YOU SNEEZE!!!

Ahahahahahahahahahahaahhaha!

*is jealous*

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-17 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if avoiding stepping on cracks is interesting, then I'm your gal. ;) I'm sure you have interesting things to fill the meme up with. YOu just sorta...pull things out of your ass and go with it. Heh.

[identity profile] xjestx.livejournal.com 2003-07-16 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That is an intersting meme to read. It made me think about the first time I heard of homosexuality. Television strikes again; the credit goes to "Degrassi High". Before that it hadn't really occured to me to think that women holding hands might be considered abnormal. My understanding of adult relationships was rather vague at that time. My lucky mum got the pleasure of explaining to nine year old me what the word 'lesbian' meant.

I had all but forgotten this.

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-17 09:56 am (UTC)(link)
My lucky mum got the pleasure of explaining to nine year old me what the word 'lesbian' meant.

Hehe. Hey, at least she explained it. It's sort of avoided as an issue altogether in Russia, so I really DID have to hear it from other people and sources. Isn't it wonderful how kids don't actually think there's anything wrong with it until they're told? *rolls eyes*

look at everyone who's on your side

[identity profile] azazello.livejournal.com 2003-07-16 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That meme is fascinating. I'd have a hard time coming up with things like that.

Oh, and just to voice my support, I'm straight, but the homophobic drivel that I hear all too often (even where I live) is infuriating. Is it just me, or is the US more polarized about this than other countries? There's a large number of people defending gay rights, but there's also a huge and vocal number of people who use all kinds of desperate arguments to dislodge and demean gays.

В России с этим наверное ещё хуже, потому что геев очень мало. Но, как ни странно, в России есть Тату, которая им помогла больше, чем любые решения верховного суда.

And yes, that picture was beautiful. And I will read At Swim as soon as I get the time.

I was going to run away and hide in the woods while my family moved to America.

My parents made me believe we were going back soon in order to make it easier for me. Then a year after we moved, I realized that they were not planning anything of the kind, and I made a huge scene which in the end had only effected me - at that moment I reconciled myself with the fact that I was here to stay.

Re: look at everyone who's on your side

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-17 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'd have a hard time coming up with things like that.

You know, that's what I thought at first, but then, like I said earlier, you just keep pulling things out of your ass and it works... heh.

And it's funny how the US boasts about political correctness and all that shit, but when it really comes down to it... Well, yeah. I found England to be much more relaxed about it. Honestly, here, people are still so fucking uptight.

A v Rossii, ya voobsche ne predstavliayu kak tam narod otnositsia teper'. Posledniy raz kogda ya tam byla (10 let!) ob etom kak-to ne govorili, i ono schitalos' napravil'nym, i vsio takoe prochee. When did you move here, how old were you? Man, that wasn't very nice, not to tell you about the permanent move... You poor thing. :-/ I think that even though I KNEW we were moving permanently, it didn't set in for a while. So, in a way, I expected to come back.

Wow, memories...

And enjoy 'At Swim' when you get around to it. ;)

(Stranny vopros - ty mal'chik ili devochka? Potomu chto ya vdrug poniala chto ne znayu... oops ;))

We moved when I was 14. I'm 20 now... so, not too long ago. It hit exactly in the middle of the process of initial high-level emotional/cultural attachment that one goes through, and resulted in quite a bit of unmitigated stress. But I ended up liking it, and now I have an idea that maybe I should keep moving to a different part of the world every 14 years :)

Мальчик - ожно догадаться по иконке и по полу псевдонима :)

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-17 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I thought, but I wanted to make sure. There have been mistakes in the past. ;)

Oh, 14 is a HELL of a time to move countries. My sympathies! I was 11, and that was hell, too, but 14... man...

It's funny, I have this feeling I'm going to move around too, for a while. I mean, right now I am dead set on England. I don't know if I'll stay there forever, but that's the plan for now. But moving... can be a good thing. When seen in perspective, of course...

[identity profile] perceval.livejournal.com 2003-07-17 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I think people knew about George Michael, just as they knew about the Pet Shop Boys. But George had girlfriends, and PSB always declined to comment. Back in the 80's, it wasn't really the Done Thing to out a star as gay.

And yeah, I'd shag k.d.lang too. She's my kinda girl, and that voice ...

You are still very cute, by the way!

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-17 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but what really has me laughing is the fact that people WERE surprised. I mean, honestly.

And yeah, I'd shag k.d.lang too.

Hehe, right on!

:)

[identity profile] soupytwist.livejournal.com 2003-07-17 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
I always thought the PSB were a couple. It never occured to me that they weren't, heh.

And talking of "People were SURPRISED?!" moments, what about Liberace? Hehehe.

- Katie, who would also shag KD Lang.
