Dead. Tired.

I am very tired.

I am also sorry I've been sorta MIA lately, especially where AIM is concerned. I'm at work from 11 to 8, give or take an hour for commutes, and that does not leave much room for fun and play. My feet are killing me, and my brain isn't firing the proper neurons at the moment. It's all good, though. I'm working this entire weekend, but whoopee, we get paid time and a half on Sundays. That rules.

So, here is my weekly (er, daily?) At Swim mention. Apparently, my store is selling British hardcover editions for five fucking dollars. So, if you're in the Boston area and would like to obtain one (there are five copies, in all), email me and I'll let you know where. If you're not in the Boston area, but would like to obtain one anyway, email me and we'll work something out. This is GOLD, people, GOLD. They sit in the bargain section and I pass them every time I go into the employees lounge. I touch the books for good luck. Yes, I am the biggest dork that ever lived, but this is At Swim we're talking about here.

And speaking of books, I finished 'Fire From Heaven' and have started 'The Persian Boy' and I just want more, more, more, because it's wonderful, beautiful, perfect. Mary Renault really IS a goddess, and I want to marry Alexander. Hmmm. That might be a problem. I need to stop falling in love with dead gay men. At least this one isn't fictional. *sigh* And I just found out today that she also wrote a non-fictional book called 'The Nature of Alexander'. Did you know about this? I almost screamed! Woohoo!

And if another person comes over to the info desk with the big 'info' sign stuck to it and asks to ring them up, I will wring their neck.

Er...not really. I'm nice. On the outside, anyway.

Nine hour shifts really aren't easy. Oh, well. I'll get used to it, I'm sure. I, er, hope, anyway.

I'm nowhere near Boston! I want one anyway! :D Meeeee!! MUHAHAHA! ::cough:: Sorry. I'm better now.

LOL! Email me. :)

British hardcover editions for five fucking dollars

Hee. Isn't it lovely? :)

I finished 'Fire From Heaven' and have started 'The Persian Boy' and I just want more, more, more, because it's wonderful, beautiful, perfect.

Dude, I finished 'The Persian Boy" and am about to start "Fire From Heaven"... :) What part are you on?

I need to stop falling in love with dead gay men.

::Snorts:: But it's so much fun. And they're so lovely. And my cousin is giving me funny looks for laughing...

[identity profile] cabari.livejournal.com 2003-07-25 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, Fire From Heaven is one of the best books ever. You are going to LOVE it, if only for the not-so-gratuitous manlove. Ah, I love that book.

Also, there is SO nothing wrong with loving dead gay men. Or at least, there mustn't be, if so many people do it.

[identity profile] aneli8.livejournal.com 2003-07-25 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I've read the first paragraph and I already love it. I did plan to read them in order, but I picked up "Persian Boy" first and read the first few pages and refused to leave the library without it. ::Happy Sigh::

All the good ones are dead gay men...

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-26 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
OK, that's logic, right there. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. I know. It's just a little frustrating, though, don't you think? *sigh*

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-26 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, they are. (Wow, look at me, channeling Billy...) They are lovely and it is fun. A bit sad, but fun all the same.

I am...er...oh! They're on their way to Babylon. :-D GOD, I love Bagoas. But I'm just...I don't know. I love Hephastian, and I don't want anything to interfere, and just... BAH!!! Oh, well. I guess I'll just wait and see and bite my nails meanwhile.

What the fuck is wrong with people??

[identity profile] jadis31.livejournal.com 2003-07-25 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
How the hell did **that** **book** end up in the bargain Bin? Am I the only one who is somehow morally offended by this? It just sat on the shelf and no one bought it? people walked in and out of the store buying CRAP and passing up the One Book for long enough that it went on clearance? Christ the world is in worse shape than I thought. I have now lost all faith in humanity.

I know it has to hurt you. after going into random book stores fronting them so that they would get more notice, now you have to see them sitting there, humiliated and desperate on a bargain rack. ohhh... It's just wrong, wrong, I tell you!

but no, I don't want one. I rather love mine the way it is... something about the writing in it makes it *special* and I do mean yours as well as his. never thanked you for that, did I? The fact that you wrote all of my crap in it for me... was just very sweet of you. you are fanfuckingtabulous.

love and Avocados,
Jo

Well, it's been 'explained' to me. You see, they don't have the right to sell the British versions, but somehow they ended up with them, so they're in the bargain section. I was offended, too, mostly on JON's behalf. But, oh well. Now I'm pimping them off, and that's cool. And you know what? Even if they are in the bargain section, those books will never look humiliated and/or desperate. They know their own worth too much for that. The stand tall and proud, proclaiming:

"GENIUS! BOYS IN LOVE! MACMURROUGH! BEAUTY! WE HAVE IT ALL AND YOU HAVE SHIT, AND LIZ LOVES US, SO THERE!"

Only kidding, of course. Well, except for the first four things...

BTW, long time no see, stranger. ;) Missed you. You're safe from me calling as I haven't had time lately. *sigh*

And you did thank me, and I'm so glad you liked that. I felt I had to, after mixing the two books up...hehe, oops. That's what you get when you carry 87 books with you and they all look the same. The soy sauce stain should have tipped me off. After all, that was a rather memorable evening! *another sigh*

love and miss you

[identity profile] cabari.livejournal.com 2003-07-25 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
And I just found out today that she also wrote a non-fictional book called 'The Nature of Alexander'

Silly girl, I own it. What's more, I went to at least 5 bookshops looking for it before I found a copy. It's wonderful, I was thinking about sending it to you but now it looks like I don't have to. It'll make you fall even more in love with him, if that's possible.

I'd be interested in a copy of The Book, but I wouldn't want you to go out of your way for me, y'know. So I'll just pine :)

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-26 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Silly girl, I own it.

I should have known. Heh. And aww, I'm touched. I'm trying not to buy it yet. I'm being all...cheap, because I have rent to pay soon. But I'm planning on taking it to breaks with me and reading on the sly. ;) Or! I could ask my mom to get at the library for me! Hey, an idea! Wheee!

Is it good? (Well, duh, but still...) I read the first paragraph and was very upset I had to work. And it made me cry because of where it starts out. *sniff*

[identity profile] cabari.livejournal.com 2003-07-26 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It's god! And the beginning shouldn't shock you, being that the man's, um, rather dead right now. His funeral, I think, was a fitting tribute to the man he was.

Just-- ahh! So much fun information in that book. Lots of speculation on the nature of the relationship between Hephaestion and Alexander. Such a shame that it all has to be speculation, so little's known about Hephaestion. So long as you don't mind nonfiction it's an amazing, enlightening read.

[identity profile] themorningstarr.livejournal.com 2003-07-25 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure you've already gotten all the requests for At Swim, but if not, I don't live in the Boston area, but I'd like to work something out.

Let me know...

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-26 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
I will! We'll see what will work. :)

[identity profile] newmaryjane.livejournal.com 2003-07-25 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Gasp. I want that book, mainly because of of your adoration for it.. I've seen it at B&N, and it looks good, but I just can't get the American version. It wouldn't be right.

Anywho, I might be driving through Boston next weekend, in which case I'd definitely want to pick up a copy. I'll let you know for sure.. otherwise I'll just order it from Amazon UK. =D

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-26 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
You might be in Boston? That's cool. Email me and let me know if you're still interested in this book, I'll try to work something out. :)

Yeah, the American paperback I just don't like. The fact that they left out the prologue really pisses me off, out of sheer principle. ARGH!

I know you'd love the book, though. Hell, almost everybody does, and whoever doesn't, doesn't count. Bwahahahaha!

Right, I'm unbiased...

Heh, kidding.

[identity profile] mombi-of-oz.livejournal.com 2003-07-26 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Godamnit! Five dollars?! *wibbles* Helllllp meeeeee. I want, I want! Stupid California... *grumbles*

I just got my mom to start reading it... I wonder how that's all gonna go... Hehehhehe.

Dee

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-26 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Which copy do you own? You own the hardcover, right? Because that one is complete, unedited... And you know, you should visit me, anyway. Heh.

Oh, I hope your mom can appreciate it. I wonder what she'll think of MacEmm... Heheheh...

MWAH!

[identity profile] mombi-of-oz.livejournal.com 2003-07-26 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes I suppose you're right. *sighs* I should have bought one when I was actually IN England. Stupid me. Oh, and yes, I'll be right over for a visit. :P

I hope she can appreciate it too! MacEmm might frighten her, or else she'll be all sobby, "that was too sad! Why'd you make me read that." I mean, she did like Hedwig, so I think she can handle the gay aspect of it... Hopefully.

Right, babbling!

I finished 'Fire From Heaven' and have started 'The Persian Boy'

They lie on my nightstand, but I didn't manage to read more than 1 chapter of Fire from Heaven. I can't wait for Hephaestion to appear! *sigh* And I have troubles with Renault's language - I don't like it. It's hard to describe but the language feels heavy and reading it makes me somnulent.

The problem with "the Persian Boy" is that it defies my OTP (A/H).

btw: I sucessfully pimped the book! And 5 dollars? Wow, now that's what I call a bargain!

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-26 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, go you! It feels great to pimp greatness. (OH, but that sounds wrong...)

See, of course I love Alexander and Hephastian together, they're perfect. I'm kind of...worried about 'The Persian Boy' in that sense... I'm just...I'll wait to see what happens. But 'Fire From Heaven' has none of that, and it's beautiful. I love her language, personally, but it's all a matter of preferance. I think it takes a little getting used to, but then it's wonderful. I suggest continuing - you'll love it, in the end, I'm sure. And Hephastian...oh, I do love him so.

*makes grumpy face*

I don't even have a copy of At Swim of my very own, as I cannot afford one! I want to live in Boston!

Excuse me why I sulk.

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-26 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Awww! You can't even afford the paperback? That sucks, man! And you live in England, of all places. Well, hmph. I'm sorry. :( (Of course, if I got this and shipped it to you, it would cost so much more than 7 quid, so it wouldn't make sense, would it...)

:( Someday you'll be able to afford it. I know it.

[identity profile] scoobygang63.livejournal.com 2003-07-26 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
hehe, precisely.

I really do have *no* money do I? but it's my birthday soon, so I plan to force my mother (who has actually just finished reading Jimmy's copy) to buy me it lol

[identity profile] soupytwist.livejournal.com 2003-07-26 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
How many days a week do you work, sweetie? I may asking mostly cause I miss you, but also, you need sleep. *huggles*

I need to find Mary Renault. I couldn't see her stuff anywhere in Waterstones last time I went, dammit. Me wants the goodness.

And... FIVE DOLLARS? Woah. Well, at least you're helping make sure they get to people who'll appreciate them. *is shocked and appalled that people walked past them*

*loves and adores*

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-07-26 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
I do need sleep, indeed, and it really fucking SUCKS that I woke up at 5:39 and couldn't get back to sleep. ANYWAY.

I work four days a week, at random each week, because schedules change. I'm working both today and tomorrow, and then I have a day off. Then I work again, and another day off. Then two days in a row, and nothing on Saturday. It's...unpredictable. Heh.

And DUDE, you DO need to find her! You can't order from Amazon, can you? I know 'Fire From Heaven' is seven quid, and you can get a used version of 'The Persian Boy' for 3.18. But that sucks that she isn't that popular in England. Bah. The library at my uni had them, though...hmmm... And that library generally sucked ass... In any case, I hope you can track them down, because it is sooo worth it.

I'm shocked and appalled, too. And you know what? There are comfy chairs, too, right across from the books. I mean, it just calls for them, you know? Here, sit, reeeead, never get up again... *sigh* I suppose people assume that since it's the bargain section, it's crap. That pisses me off. Argh.

*loves and misses*

Hmm - I don't know. I'm not sure if the book is worth it...
No! Just kidding. I would love one - but I'm nowhere near Boston. I'll be in Rockford, Illinois from August 7th or 8th on. Any way we/you could arrange this?

[identity profile] lumaria.livejournal.com 2003-07-26 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I found the book for six bucks at my local book outlet. British hardcover. Tacky, tacky, tacky.

But I mean, obviously I bought it. :)

Hello,

Hello,

I’m ZoeSmith from the sugarquill. I found a link to your LJ at the howl Kingdom.
You probably don’t know me, but well the thread you started at the Empty classroom converted me to the One True Way and I also owe you for “mentioning” ;-), <At Swim, Two Boys>. I’m really really loving this book even if it’s taking me quite an effort to understand it (I’m Greek).
I’m sorry for intruding but I have a soft spot for Alexander. He made History my favorite class at school and he was my first crush at about 9 (ok, I’m weird).
Now, naturally, I want to read 'Fire From Heaven' and 'The Persian Boy'. I hope I’ll be able to find them here in Greece. Is the language too hard to understand? I don’t want to buy the Greek versions (if they’re translated in Greek...), because it will not be the same.
Anyway, sorry for bumping in like that. :-)

Kisses, Zoe

*wanders over from soupy's LJ* British hardcover? Gah! Even the library (and I'm in Canada) has the bloody American version - no offence, I just hate having to see my favourite, most honourable and labourious words butchered. I think I may go trawling some bookstores... or maybe the library made a mistake here?

So I won't just leave a gawking comment - I thank you for the by the by recommendations, and would like to make some of my own:

Edinburgh by Alexander Chee (marvellous style, like watching a painting, not reading a book)

Bear Me Safely Over by Sheri Joseph (like a group of short stories from different perspectives on the same story)

Both of these my library linked me to from At Swim, and they did not disappoint (while I awaited my placein the holds line)
