Old Pal of My Heart

Somebody wrote to me about 'At Swim' the other day, and included these lyrics to a song I've never heard. It's an old country/bluegrass song and it gave me chills, reading the lyrics. Put that to an Irish melody, and you've got

"Old Pal Of My Heart"
Jimmie Rogers

The shadows of twilight are falling
On a heart so lonesome and blue
I can hear a voice sweetly calling
And it brings back mem'ries of you.

Old pal of my heart, are you lonesome?
Old pal of my dreams, are you blue?
It's been many days since we parted
My thoughts are forever of you.

Life is so empty without you
I long for you forever it seems
For I know you'll always be the same sweetheart to me
When I come back to you in my dreams.

And oh how I long for you darling
To hold you again tenderly
And hear you say that you always will be
Just the same old sweet pal to me.

(Needless to say, SPOILERS, so don't read unless you've finished.)

Isn't it? It's simply perfect!..

Should this go on ASTB2? Where can we get it from?

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-09-05 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
I thought about that. I don't know where you'd find it - it's an old (I'm assuming American) country song... how easy would it be to find?.. Not very Irish...but the lyrics are perfect. Hmmm. I can ask?..

Just think. At least you are not alone. We can hold you through the tough times. I believe we need a support group for this, actually.... hmmm...

*hugs again*

ASTB : The Support Group

A support group is a very good idea: What is life after ASTB like? Is there anything I should expect in the coming weeks? Am I going to get the shakes, or one day will I be putting gas in the car and suddenly I mistake a car horn for a young boy shouting "What cheer!" and then I collapse, forlorn and weeping on the pavement?

OMG, is that going to happen to us?

What you should expect is some changes in your daily language. That will only last a few days, though. For a while, you'll sound just a tad too Irish for your locale. Then, the wounds will heal a little bit. You won't want to break down every time you see a picture of the sea, the color green, a red hand badge or a flute. In a month, you will start planning your trip to Ireland. Depending on your cirumstances, you could actually go there. You will spend two days on the Forty Foot and never ever want to leave.

And, of course, you will walk around for the next year saying 'What cheer, eh?' to anybody who might possibly understand, and even those who will not. Prepare yourself.

And to think I wasted my last trip to Ireland on visiting relatives when I SHOULD have been jumping in the sea (holding on to the ladder) in tribute to Jim and Doyler. This thought actually makes me weep harder.

Uh oh -- caught a glimpse of a green toyota out of the corner of my eye - Yes, green. Green like the Irish earth. The soil for which boys fought and died. I need more Skittles.

So it begins!!

heheheheheeheheheee

Indeed. See, next time you're in Ireland, you gotta go. It's a must. There's a ladder, too!!

What cheer, eh? ;)

I am confusing myself.

Woohoooo!! That's awesome!

It sucks that you can't email, though. BAH. Oh! BTW, will we update at some point?.. I wish I could get dreamweaver on MY damn computer, but I don't think I can. BAH. Let me know how busy you are, etc. The fest is over, so we can put those fics up, too.

[identity profile] stereo-m.livejournal.com 2003-09-05 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, dude. Updates. I've done some coding and stuff. Gah. Hmm. Let's see, I might be able to get someting done tomorrow. :) I have a test on Monday, so I really should, you know. Study. >.< Have an English essay to write, too. School suck. At least when it is interfering with Kingdom business. ;)

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-09-05 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Hehehe, then don't worry about it, ok? If you've got stuff coded and can easily put it up, that would rock. But if not - totally ok. Study! Write! Hehehe. I will have to read. A lot. >.<

This is beautiful! Brought me tears. I can't stop crying when I think of the book. Does it ever end?

Jim and Doyler.......

[identity profile] jenni-snake.livejournal.com 2003-09-06 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Gah, as if finishing wasn't bad enough, now you're trying to make us short out our keyboards with an overflow of salt water. Now where are we going to find us a songwriter to put those lyrics to a marvellous Irish ballad?

p.s. Have you read Edinburgh yet? Hmm?

[identity profile] jadis31.livejournal.com 2003-09-06 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, sweet lord, that is *perfect*...
I don't know if i really want to hear it, though. I mean, it's an old country song. the way it sounds in my head, is beautiful. I don't know if i want to hear it all kinds of country...

Love and Beautiful Music,
Jo
