"A prurient, often voyeuristic, unbearably self-conscious, digressive and tedious agglomeration of pages."

This is a review of "At Swim, Two Boys" from the Jerusalem Post. I just felt like sharing. The mind boggles. Did the person read the same book as we did? And if so, have they gotten their head out of their own ass now? No? Didn't think so.

For the love of all that's sane. Just because you know a few "big words" doesn't make you an expert in literature. Now go and read Ann Coulter.

Ah! the idiocy!

My thoughts exactly! Tedious made me laugh. I mean...I can see it?... But not really... It's like that person on Amazon saying that they read "the first 300 pages and couldn't get into it". Err... that's the entire first PART.

As for voyeuristic...I took it to mean that we - as the audience - saw things that we shouldn't have. Except that's idiotic, because there isn't a single thing in that book that I would have gotten rid of. Besides which, it was never VULGAR, for crying outloud. It was perfectly done, with taste, sensitivity and beauty. What-the-fuck-ever, man.

That review is very, very funny. Yeah, well, that's the gist of it. ;) Hehehe...

I can see how someone might call the book tedious. I suspect if you're unable to synchronize your mind up with JON's style (which is possible, although most of us reading your LJ have not had that problem) you might find ASTB to be very long, difficult reading that could impact your impression of it. As for the rest...wutevre.

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-10-09 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see that, yet not understand it. But that is, obviously, me, and I am oh, so very unbiased... As for the rest, wutevre really just sums it up. Heh.

BULLSHIT.

You will be happy to know that I have a whole bunch of new gay-friendly female friends here, so I am planning to suck them into the world of ASTB very soon. :D

Woohoo! Spread the joy/heartbreak!

And bullshit is a good word for it. *nods*

(Got your email, short answer: of course, and will email back soon :))

Well . . . I may have scared them tonight when we passed the Queers & Allies office on campus and I asked if I could "go in there and make a friend" today, so I may have to wait before I start making recommendations. But oh, it will happen. ;)

If I was the squeeing type, I would right now. Thanks!

I've read that one before, and just sort of... *blink* *snicker* *moving on*

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-10-10 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
Hehe, yeah, I remember that. You were talking to me online at the time. Hehe. *MWAH!*

(BTW, did you get the, er, things?..)

[identity profile] mombi-of-oz.livejournal.com 2003-10-10 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
*sigh* I've read that before. Oh well, the amount of good feedback about "At Swim" is fucking... amazing, ya know?

That person is just... wrong. *sigh*

Oh, heyyyy, what does this: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/074325595X/qid=1065763415/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/103-1316087-0520611?v=glance&s=books mean to you? :D :D

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-10-10 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it is amazing, which is why, I think, Jamie O'Neill decided to put that up there, as well. It still boggles my mind that anybody would WRITE that, but they're stupid, and it's their loss. Heh.

And I own it. ;) Bwahahahahah...Katie, Gemma and Co. got it for me while I was in England...now I'm waiting to see if they re-release "Disturbance" here, too. (These are old - they were written ten years or so before "At Swim" came out...)

[identity profile] mombi-of-oz.livejournal.com 2003-10-10 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Bitch. :P Oh, okay. You can get is used: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/offering/list/-/0297794922/all/ref=sr_pb_a/103-1654949-5034257 ("Disturbance" I mean...)

So wait, did you read that book then? DId you like it? Doesn't he think it's crap? Can I ask you ten million questions, and be really, really annoying?! :D :D

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-10-10 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll email you... k? :)

Oh, and yeah - $741?!?! The FUCK?!

[identity profile] mombi-of-oz.livejournal.com 2003-10-10 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
*tee* There's one for 11.88! Heheheh... how cool would it be to have your book trying to sell for 750 bucks?

Ah, yes, e-mail me! :) When you get the chance. ;)

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-10-10 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehe, I know, I was just so taken aback by THAT. Heh.

Ok, I tried. But I don't have your email. Nevermind. I'm dumb. I have an EMAIL FROM YOU. Right. I'll go do that right now. Heh.

[identity profile] soupytwist.livejournal.com 2003-10-10 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
The best thing to do with things like that is to go "bibbety biibety wim wam flobbet!" at them. Heh.

*loooooooooove*

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-10-10 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
That is a fine answer, indeed ;)

*MWAAAAAAAAH!*

I can't believe anyone could assemble such a great collection of academic buzz words and leave out "rhetoric" ;) What an asshole.

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2003-10-10 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Asshole's a good word. But HOW could he have missed "rhetoric"?! Chuh!

[identity profile] jenni-snake.livejournal.com 2003-10-14 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that's strange, I didn't know that there were people out there who didn't like a bit of sexy, peeping-tomish, insecure ramblings, preferably bound together in a profusion of sheets. *ahem*

I can't say I didn't like At Swim, I can just say I liked Killbrack better. But you've probably all already read it.
