Question:

What would you say if somebody from a university called you and offered to pay you a hundred (100) dollars for participating in a 3-hour workshop?

I don't know, maybe it's my perpetual squalor, but I sure as hell wouldn't say: "No, thank you, I'm not interested."

I have decided that either the people we're calling are filthy rich and for them a hundred dollars is like a buck here and there, or somebody has proclaimed the apocalypse and money is no longer of any importance to anybody, in which case, why wasn't I informed?!

So far I've gotten one person to do it. She was Russian. Maybe we're just a greedy damn nation.

Well, it would depend on the workshop, you know. What is it about?

Money isn't everything. :D (Whoa, did I say this out loud? Me, when I have cursed my clients 100000 times today for not sending my paychecks?)

Three hours, huh? Well, sign me in. ;-)

$100 for 3 hours? I don't care what it's about, sign me up.

That seems nutso to me. Unless it's something like, I dunno, a baby-killing seminar. But somehow I don't think it is...

*much, much love to you, darling*

*miss*

can't you put my number into the computer? please?

You know I would be there... even if it were a baby killing seminar....

then again, you know what I want the money for.

Love and Poverty,
Jo

To be fair, telemarketers don't have the best reputation (I know! surprise!) and a lot of people probably assume it's either a COMPLETE scam or a ploy to keep them on the phone until you can get them to agree to buy something or otherwise. I'm poor as hell too (hello measly grad student stipend!), but I can't say that I would really agree to participate in a workshop if someone called me about it--I really would be afraid it was a scam and I would hate to risk wasting my time (because I never have much time to waste). I know you wouldn't participate in scamming people, because I know you, but don't get offended or anything--the people on the other end of the line don't know you. (Too fucking bad for them!)

And come on, America is so a greedier nation than Russia. ;D

In other news, I'm glad you had such a wonderful weekend--even if you DID pay for it today; that's the MARK of a great weekend. Mwahaha.

Honestly, unless it was a call directly from the University administration, I'd be deeply suspicious that there was some sort of hidden catch. That said, I might say no even if it WAS from the University - depends what the seminar was on, and how convenient it would be to attend, as I'm a hoarder of time and give it up very grudgingly. ^_^

Well, were you calling a student at the school or someone totally random? I know I wouldn't give up 3 hours for a hundred bucks unless it was something I'm really into...I make more than that at work so my time is more valuable. So, I guess it depends on who you ask.

Maybe if you said it was "over thirty bucks an hour," cause shii, I need thirty bucks.

Did you tell them they get free food? And if the food is good or not?

Honestly? I'd think it was a scam, apoligize and hang up. I'm cynical like that.
