On Karaoke.

Oh, yes. Karaoke.

Yesterday, Theresa and I went to the drama society pub crawl that involved Karaoke. Twas mucho entertaining.

At first, we all just sat around outside a campus pub, talking and trying not to freeze our asses off. It wasn't so much a "pub crawl" as a "pub sit", and throughout the entire evening, I didn't buy a single drink. Aren't you proud of me? Moderation is key!

Well, in any case, it was rather interesting. I realize now that what I really want to talk to people about is literature, life, all that deep stuff that many avoid. Or maybe it isn't deep. Maybe it's all crap. In any case, that's what I want to talk about, but while sitting in a pub, you aren't likely to find that. But it was still fun. There was a boy there (whom I first met at the LGBT tour of Brighton) who astounded me by saying that he liked US more than England. I think the fact that his boyfriend lives there is a big factor. But he gave more reasons, and I was surprised. I guess it's all to do with the novelty. He was nice, in any case, even if I could understand about half of what he said. Oops.

When we finally went to the karaoke place (located in a big shiny bowling alley), I had another first experience - my first time riding in a car with the steering wheel on the wrong side. No matter how much people here might deny it, it's the WRONG SIDE. Hehe... But we drove through some absolutely lovely countryside, and the sunset was wonderful. Ahhhh... And it's fun being squished in the back seat. I can't believe how tiny the cars here are - I don't know if I've already said this, but it's great. I love not seeing huge Cadillacs and Lincolns.

In any case, karaoke was certainly entertaining. N. (that boy that I was talking about) and I ended up singing 'Summer Nights' from 'Grease' and having a fun time of it. Later, he, Theresa and I also sang 'It's Raining Men'. Oh, yeah. It was a blast.

Sometime in the beginning, a guy got up to sing something, and as soon as the music began, everyone either groaned or laughed, but I didn't recognize what it was. Then, he started to sing it. And that's when I almost fell off my chair laughing, although for completely different reasons than everyone else.

"You never close your eyes anymo-ore, when I kiss your li-ips..."

Sam used to sing that to me, just for the hell of it. Before we even started 'going out', he would call and instead of saying something, start to sing it. It was hysterical. And I have never actually heard this song in any other way but with Sam (and sometimes Brian) doing it. It was definitely a bitter-sweet sort of moment. And funny as hell.

And today were auditions for "Sweet Charity", but I decided to not do it. I know, I know. But I signed up to be on the crew. I think it would be more fun. The thing is, for a musical you have to be able to sing, dance and act. I can only sing, theoretically, but haven't done it in so long that my voice is shot to hell. And I remember a time when my voice instructor told to never ever stop singing. Well, that's a story for a different, more bitter, time.

In any case, I went there just to support Theresa (Marie went with me for laughs) and she and I ended up coaching people on their American accents. It was great. They had to do a short little monologue from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", though none of them actually realized it (I have seen the movie way too many times not not recognize the "They could be fascist anarchists. That still wouldn't change the fact that I don't own a car," line.) And it was so cute they way they tried, so valiantly, to sound American... Most of them did end up sounding American - but mostly Alabaman (whooo, is that a word?). Apparently, the Southern accent is just an exaggerated Northern accent.

And then I read more Wilde and enjoyed myself immensely. I had someone ask me if I had to read the whole book (it's a big one - complete works, baby) and then widen her eyes upon finding out that it was for myself that I was reading, and not for class. Huh. Bad flashback to Long Island. Ah, well.

Marie made up for it by saying that you won't find better company than Wilde, even if he is dead. I told her that nobody was perfect. She agreed.

My God, am I lucky that she ended up here!

And, whoa, Russian people on my left, talking. And they're Russian Russian, not American Russian. Haven't seen those since...well, I was in Russia. Weird...

And that's all, folks. Have a pleasant night. :)

She got friendly, down in the saaaaaaaand!

Hehehehe ROX on you and your kareoke self. And incidentally, Raining Men was featured at the end of the first season of Queer As Folk (the UK version that was filmed just near me, which rox), and I looooove that moment so I love that song. :D

And I love chatting about people and literature and stuff like that. It's the best. As is Wilde.

And littler cars are so better than the great gallon-guzzlers you see in the States. :P And of course all American accents are the same really, hehehe. And as for the steering wheel bit, I'm afraid you're wrong there too. :P

*love*

Kareoke has got to be one of the best forms of entertainment in the world. I own a big kareoke machine with what Fu calls "Big thumpin-ass speakers". She also claims it is my "Poor poufy excuse for an extension of my penis". The campier the song, the better.

ah, but it's such a fun extension! :D

i can realy believe you have a kareoke machine - and that is awesome. it really is the best form of entertainment out there!

Hey now...

I support you drinking. I support you not drinking. I support whatever the hell you want to do, as long as you have fun and be safe:-)

So glad you're meeting people. Keep singing "It's Raining Men"...maybe someday it actually WILL.

:-D

oh, lord, don't i wish... ;)

yes. safe is good. and i don't drink nearly enough that it would actually become a problem. but it was amusing - the only reason i didn't drink was because they didn't have what i wanted. so, i just said 'fuck it' and went away. because i didn't know what else i could drink that i could actually like. shows how much i get out...
