Oh, but I am happier now - why? Because we - Marie, Theresa and I - are planning a trip to Italy! The very last week of term, when we each have one class that we're planning on simply not going to. We're travelling through Northern Italy. Ahhhhh... I am so excited. Could I possible get pointers? In fact, the girls are ordering the tickets even as we speak... Gotta love cheap promotional flights.
And in order to be able to pay for it all (lodging, food, etc.) we're planning on basically living communally for the next few weeks - meaning, eating together. Which we do most of the time, anyway, but now even more so - and with more purpose. Hurrah for combined shopping. Should be fun...
Oh, and I didn't mention this earlier, but now is as good a time as any.

Oh, and don't leave the cities. The cities are like beacons of civilization in an otherwise frightening countryside. If you go country driving, you WILL be in danger of a wreck. The road are very small, commonly with deep ditches on both sides, and Italian people drive very, very fast.
They also don't break.
Or use common road courtesy.
Or turn signals.
Or...you get the point.
Oh, and don't buy a pizza in Italy. Ever. You're better off getting a burger, because Italian pizza is NOTHING like pizza anywhere else. It's pretty bland, and made of chunky tomatos and goat cheese and stuff.

Italy
We had one night where we didn't have a hotel, because our bus back to Budapest was leaving Florence at noon the next day. We couldn't get into the hostel, so we stayed up all night roaming Florence and dozing on park benches. The payoff is that seeing all the sites at 6 am when no one else is up is well worth it.
So, er, yeah. I guess my advice is - you don't need a hotel room? I don't know. Maybe that's not good advice. I will say that our best meals were the ones that we cooked on the hotplate in our villa room. The restaurants were good, but the general Italian produce seemed better. Of course, we could have been eating in the wrong places.

We're starting with Milan, and ending in Venice. I still can't quite believe it, but since we already have the tickets, I guess I should... I'm not sure exactly when we're going where, but we're basically covering the span between the two cities, from what I understand. Should be wonderful. Cheap hostels or no.
Italy
My advice to you would be to get a guidebook. I recommend the Rough Guides. I have the one for Italy, but it's a) three years out of date, and b) at home. Just about anything you want to know should be in there. I read one for every country I visit, and have yet to be disappointed.
On pizza: Italian pizza is very different from US pizza, but I didn't think it was all that different from some UK pizza (think Pizza Express but really, really, really good).
A warning: Venice in the winter
stinks to high heavenhas a very pervasive odor. However, it is a great place to buy souveniers (especially if you want to get everyone glass jewelry).Above all, be safe and have fun!

I was laughing.. until i took the quiz. i will admit i was trying for Snape/Harry... apparently it isn't an option. instead i ended up with Snape/Hermione. I screamed. it was not pretty.
you are going to italy!!!!! that is amazing. that is wondrous. Percy W. is so very right about their driving. the one time i was in northern italy i was in an accident. a drunk driver smashed into my poor little rental car, at 10 am. even i don't drink at 10 am!! unfortunately every other time i have gone to italy i haven't gone north of Rome. I am sure that it will be fabulous for all of you :)
