On Slash and Hotbits

So, this article has me really pissed off. Not just because it attacks slash in the worst way possible - chucking it all up as pornographic - but also because it's badly-written, uninformed, and biased as all hell.

Why is it that every single anti-slash person thinks that all slash is is an excuse to write graphic pornography? Have they actually READ any of it? I do wonder. There is a lot of stuff out there that deals with feelings, two characters - as people, real people, not just holes and cocks - but, apparently, that gets skimmed over. Because it's ALL corrupted and ewwww, dirty.

And let me ask you this - why is it totally Ok to write crappy or even good het smut, and any mention of a same-sex pairing and lawyers are up in arms? Besides, honestly, I think it's all a bunch of crap. I hope. I hope it is. Anyone know if there have been any sites that have actually been shut down?

You know, it really is unfair that slash gets such a bad rep - and one of the worst arguments that I have heard is that it "cheapens the friendship". Now, let me see. If it does, then how does het not cheapen it? Hmmmm? How come it doesn't cheapen the friendship when two totally separate and arbitrary characters get paired up just because they're a boy and a girl? Isn't that slightly hypocritical? Just a tad?

And, I'm sorry, but knowing about homosexual relationship does not corrupt anyone. It's a part of life that should be accepted, and as early as is possible.

And here is my answer to all the "slash corrupts" assholes -

If W. H. Auden could do it, then so can we. And he is considered to have been one of the greatest poets ever - for a reason, mind you. This particular poem is called "The Platonic Blow". Yes, the sort of blow that you're thinking of. Go ahead, read it. I dare you. It's got the [livejournal.com profile] stereo_m seal of approval. Heh.

So, what does it take for your boyfriend to FINALLY pick up Harry Potter? A near break-up. Yeah. Somehow, somewhere, we almost broke up yesterday, for good. And then didn't. And then I got a phonecall at 2am informing me that I am loved and that there are these two people called "Hermeeown" and "Hagrid", and there was suspicious rustling of pages in the background. It would have been even more disgustingly cute if I hadn't been woken up in the middle of the freakin' night and kept from sleeping. Which I don't take too well to. Argh.

In any case.

No other news, my life is unexciting at the moment, but I like it that way. Less to be scared about. Heh.

And methinks that a long-sleeved SQ t-shirt will have to be purchased by me... Yes, indeedy. It'll be complicated. But dammit, I need that shirt. Any shirt that has The One True Way on it has to be mine. Or at least one. *rubs hands together*

And, ummm, is it just me or is this the most adorable hobbit bit in the entire book? (Not that I've read all of it yet, but still...)

At that moment there was a knock on the door, and Sam came in. He ran to Frodo and took his left hand, awkwardly and shyly. He stroked it gently and then he blushed and turned hastily away.
'Hullo, Sam!' said Frodo.
'It's warm!' said Sam. 'Meaning your hand, Mr. Frodo. It has felt so cold through the long nights. But glory and trumpets!'

*sniff* Awwwww...

How appropriate. Ha.

That is quite the poem. Ah, Auden. . .:-)

It definitely leaves John Donne's ode to cunnilingus in the dust. Of course, that was written a few centuries earlier.

*cackles* You know, I do wonder why none of the anthologies of Auden that this library carries has that particular poem. Heh.

Note to self - must find more Donne...

Well, it is the Scotsman, so you can't really expect anything else. Proper research? Original reporting? That's for other papers. Seriously, as I understand it, the Scotsman has an anti-gay agenda, so this would have been grist to that particular mill.

Unfortunate that this paper is probably read by JKR (it's published in her home town); I wonder what she makes of it all.

Roche

ps — I got Sirius too. I was trying for Remus, but not too hard, in case I ended up with Dumbledore or Hagrid...

Oh, those bastards! No wonder they went after slash so hard-core. The least they could have done was written it better, honestly... I was gagging simply on the writing itself, much less the 'message'.

Ok, that's bad. Can you imagine *that* scene? Early morning, J.K. Rowling, heavily pregnant, sits down for breakfast. Opens up the morning paper. And promptly spills her, say, orange juice, all over her maternity clothes. Oy vey...

And, yes, I was trying for Remus, but afraid of getting Hagrid. I guess Sirius was the middle-ground. ;)
