SGA, 3x13.

As [livejournal.com profile] maryavatar wisely said, What. The. Fuck?

Seriously. They needed to decide before even sitting down to write this episode whether or not it was going to be funny or KOLYA. Because I? Feel jipped. Kolya is a special brand of villain. I love him, and I love his dynamic with Sheppard in all the previous episodes. They're men on equal footing who know just what to do to hurt each other. "Common Ground" was a fucking brilliant episode, so to have that right before we get...this? Very, very disappointing.

Because, okay. They KILLED HIM OFF. Why would you kill him off? WHY? Especially in such a dumb, faux-Western, comical way? This is Kolya, Sheppard's arch enemy. This had to be done in a much more effective, cool, tense and scary way. Without any comic-relief characters with pikes in the background. GOD. Ugh. I so wanted to CHEER for John, in any future where he got to finally, FINALLY beat Kolya, and this was just such a let-down.

Good points: the episode was...kind of funny?

Bad points: Kolya should not have been anywhere near it.

Good points: Rodney trying to carve his way out of a cell with a spoon!

Bad points: C'mon, John, like you didn't KNOW the first thing Kolya would try to do is kill off your team.

Good points: Ronon in the cell! ♥

Bad points: They shot Kolya.

Good points: John being hot. The personal shield dying the way it did. Rodney always being the first to get the axe by Kolya - of course (hit Sheppard where it hurts, you know?). John's guttural "KOLYAAA!!" as Kolya's about to shoot Rodney. *win*

Bad points: Rodney just being comic relief in this. Eh. I am not so much about that. In the last episode, he was so wonderful - their whole dynamic was bursting with happy and just regular Atlantis fun, even as they were all, you know, dropping like flies of headaches. This time around, it's very much "let's make fun of McKay" and eh.

This episode just had no idea what it wanted to do, and as much as I laughed at some parts, it was mostly just contrived and upsetting, especially compared to "Echoes" which was just glorious. This was...stupid. I don't know. They weren't at their sharpest, they weren't at their best, they got their asses kicked. Ronon didn't really get to do his thing (although he was funny), Teyla once again just looked pretty, and what was Carson doing there, anyway? Oh, yeah, he was there to conduct a test on Lucius. Whoop.

The best part about the whole thing was finding out that John's childhood hero was Evil Knivel and Rodney's was Batman. LOVE.

Other than that? The writers will have to work a LOT harder than that next time. Just sayin'. *glares in their general direction*

Hmm.

Yeeeeeeeah. So with you there. It just seemed confused and off-the-cuff, and not up to the level of the rest of the season. I did love the Batman bits (Batman is my favourite too) and the Princess Bride reference (who wants to bet that was Martin Gero's contribution? The man READS MY EMAIL), but the rest of it was a little too WTF.

Yeah, easily the worst episode of the season, if not EVER. Sigh. Makes me sad. There were some priceless moments (Ronon! ♥) but there are priceless moments in EVERY episode. This was just. Oh, man. Not good. SIGH.

... okay, I want to say that it's not the worst episode ever, but nothing else is really coming to mind. Well, I hate Misbegotten, but I think that's not because it's a bad episode qua episode, I just hate how everyone seems to misplace their ethics. Liek, moreso than usual.
