mrsronweasley: (YES WE CAN)

November 5, 2008

So many people have already said all of these things, and so, so much better than me, but I just want to get my jumbled thoughts down on paper, because - I don't know. It's an incredible day.

I am so proud to be an American today. I am so proud of my country. I am so proud to have been surrounded by my nearest and dearest, with others just a phone call away, when Barack Obama was declared the President Elect.

I kept thinking about what Leo said to Bartlett on "The West Wing" - "They say that a good man can't get elected President. Now, I don't believe that. Do you?"

And finally, after years of despairing at the bigotry, and the hatred, and the lying, and the scheming, after years and years of cynicism and old white guys deciding everybody else's fate, I BELIEVE, because LOOK WHAT WE CAN DO.

His speech made me cry, over and over again. Seeing the people's faces, so filled with hope and joy, was incredible. John McCain's concession speech was, as somebody else put it, the epitome of class. I was VERY impressed and proud of him last night. No conniving, no waiting till the eleventh hour, no trying to squeeze in a lst-minute slide - he knew, and he made the call. After two elections that seemed to drag on for years, this was quick and decisive and clear.

(And as gutted as I am about the horrible and disgusting Prop 8 passing, it won't last. You KNOW it won't last. We're standing on a precipice, and it's only a matter of time. I really, truly believe that. We will not stand for anything else.)

Guys. We have OBAMA. He is MY PRESIDENT. THIS is who we've been waiting for.

I am so proud today.

Wow, yes. *hugs*

And as gutted as I am about the horrible and disgusting Prop 8 passing, it won't last. You KNOW it won't last. We're standing on a precipice, and it's only a matter of time. I really, truly believe that. We will not stand for anything else.

I AM SO, SO PROUD!

I'm not sure I share your chartitable opinion on McCain's speech - I was impressed when I watched it, but thinking on it, "he didn't whine or throw a fit" is really rather faint praise. But anyway, can you believe the crowd at the McCain speech? Guys, you're on national TV. Shut up.

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2008-11-06 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, it's not that he didn't whine or throw a fit, but that he did make that attempt at telling his supporters that they have to throw their support behind their new president-elect and get to work. I don't know, it seemed genuine to me! (They were HORRIBLE. Talk about proving the liberals' point, huh? Ugh.)

I am LOVING the amount of hope I'm seeing on my flist this morning both for the future in general and for striking prop 8 (and the ones in Arkansas and Arizona and Florida, god, please, too) down again eventually, and just- YES. This is so amazing.

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2008-11-06 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't it just wonderful? It makes my heart swell with pride! SO MUCH JOY, CLAIRE! I DON'T EVEN KNOW!
