Mommy, I wrote Yuletide!

YAY THE REVEAL IS UP THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.

This is what I wrote:

Title: "Impudicité: A Christmas Tale"
Fandom: At Swim, Two Boys - Jamie O'Neill
Summary: On the Eve of Christmas, a young Anthony MacMurrough finds that his road will never be an easy one. (3950 words, rated PG)

Yeah. So, I wrote ASTB. I know, I KNOW, but I got hit with the desire to, and then? Somebody actually asked for it. I had to do it! They made me! And I had, honestly, the easiest time of it. Because what they asked for? Was "MacMurrough. Anything MacMurrough."

Hi, my name is Liz, have we met? Good to meet you. I AM IN LOVE WITH ANTHONY MACMURROUGH. I think we'll get along.

Seriously, I sat down, and wrote this in three sessions. The words kind of came, and my betas really, really helped. And I don't even feel dirty. Is that wrong? /o\

The best thing is that I actually got comments. Five comments! Which I did not expect! I even got RECCED? YAY? Because it's At Swim. So, I'm really quite happy with the end results of this. Yay for YULETIDE.

Oh, Liz.

My heart.

I love love love it. I. Love. It.

And, the thing is, I haven't read the book in ages, and a lot of the details are fuzzy in my head, but this makes complete sense anyway, and it's clear, it's wonderful, and have I mentioned? I love it?

And you do that thing where you pick absolutely the most perfect words in certain sentences- you write it exactly the way it's meant to be conveyed, and it makes me endlessly happy, and just:

... burying it in the hole he had dug for himself. Patting down the earth with red fingers, he rose and stomped once, twice, on the spot, and made it invisible.

It's the last bit that does it for me, and I don't even know why, it just... yes. The image, or the connotations, they're subtle, and I don't know if you even meant to do it, but it's there and it works.

And:

He wondered if, the first time they lied, all boys became men.

I cannot textually render what this does to me. That look I gave you when I finished reading? It's that. It breaks my heart, entirely, completely.

And, honestly, the note Russ writes is... it's perfect. The words, the syntax, the simplicity, the brevity, all of it, it's the simplest thing ever, but it's perfect, and I'm so sorry I can't actually express these things better.

I don't even know, Liz. I am consistently in awe of you and your writing, and this is a beautiful piece- MacEmm is such a broken character when we meet him in the book, and this is... this is the moment before the fall. Maybe right after. It's wonderfully done, and I think you do full justice to the book.

better late than never?

I just read this, randomly tonight, and even though I have never heard of this book before, I ordered it from Amazon. because if it is half as gorgeous and wonderful as this story, it is well worth reading. you have an incredible way with language that sets the tone of your stories so clearly and economically. the voices and experiences of the characters come through so clearly i can feel the sheets cooling around my toes and the tensions around the table, and smell the wind off the ocean. i am so glad i found this and got to be transported. thank you for writing!

Wow, thank you so much! I have to tell you - you're in for an AMAZING treat. I can't even properly express how incredible that book is, once you get going (it's a bit rough going with the dialect in the beginning, but it pulls you right in, and you might feel completely broken by the end. This is your warning.)

I went back to look at the fic in a way that somebody who didn't know anything about the book might, and it's funny how - hmm. I don't know. This is backstory, so by the time you read the book, this particular character is roughly 30 (his exact age has never really been established, but let's say 30 -/+ 2) and pretty changed, but I hope it makes sense.

Thank you so much for your kind words - this fic is very very close to my heart, and I'm so glad you enjoyed it. And, like I said, the book itself is - a treat. More than. It's the most amazing book I've ever read. So, you know. Enjoy it, and you know who to blame when you're done. :)
