ION: help me. *CLINGS*

Okay, so. My computer, which has already had a MYRIAD PROBLEMS (and is just over a year old. Thanks for the DUD, DELL. >:(((( ) is at it AGAIN.

This has happened before, where for WHATEVER reason, my computer won't load LJ properly.

This is what it looks like.

:/ Like. There's no top menu, and it's all fucked up. When I go to comment on something, however, it starts a new page (instead of just dropping down) and THEN LJ looks normal. (But the drop-downs don't work.) When I'm NOT in mode=reply, however, it goes back to being what it is up there.

It's not the END of the world, but last time, it only got WORSE, because it started loading other sites like delicious.com the same way. Which is super annoying and basically makes it unworkable.

Also, last time this happened, I had them replace the entire hard drive, because there were various other issues involved. I would really like to not have to do that again, 'cause it was a huge pain in my ass. :|

What can I do? I uninstalled a couple of programs I didn't really need, restarted this MULTIPLE times, and still: this is what it looks like. As far as I can tell, in my limited knowledge, it's some kind of script that refuses to run, right? Or SOMETHING like it? Because this is what my "post" window looks like right now.

This is meta.

:/

So, so. Any help would be REALLY appreciated. I'm hoping it just goes away on its own, but maybe I could somehow help it along. SIGH.

Is it me? You can tell me, computer. I want to help you. You just have to want to help yourself.

ETA: OOOH YAY. I did ~~~something and it's back to normal. YAY. THANK YOU, YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST.

I would try re-installing everything I could think of that might be relevant, up to the OS if need be. But ow. :(

Ugh, I know. :/ I re-installed Firefox and it...didn't help. I actually couldn't handle it so now I'm on Safari? But it's also driving me crazy. :P WE SHALL SEEEE.

I have the most obvious troubleshooting suggestions (I only play an IT person on tv), so you might have done all this already, but: does it fix itself when you restart the computer, at least temporarily? Does it do it in other browsers, or only firefox? If it's just firefox, try disabling any add-ons or extensions you're using and restarting firefox. If that doesn't work, uninstall and reinstall firefox (it SHOULD keep your bookmarks and settings, but you probably want to back up your bookmarks somewhere just in case.) There might be something totally obvious I'm missing, too.

No, no, NOTHING IS TOO OBVIOUS. I re-installed Firefox but it didn't help. I might try disabling all the add-ons and seeing where that gets me. SIGH SIGH. I'm hoping it just goes away at one point. :P I'm on Safari right now and I MISS FIREFOX SO MUCH OMG.

[identity profile] janet-carter.livejournal.com 2010-11-27 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, try the add-ons! They can interfere with all kinds of things, and sometimes they'll work fine until something updates and breaks them. And I feel like more and more people I know like Chrome - I haven't used it because it doesn't work with the Mac OS version I have, and doesn't have the privacy settings we want at work, but it has a lot of the add-ons that Firefox has at this point.

I just cleared the cache! It worked! EEEEEEEEEEEEP!
catwalksalone: what do you mean 'delete me'? can you relete me? (better off ted relete me)

I had a similar problem when I disabled Java in Chrome. When I re-enabled it, voila. Oh, and then there was a time I had to clear the cache and browsing history. Have you done anything like that?

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2010-11-27 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
HMMMMMM. See, Java is enabled. Is there a way to...uninstall it? (Yes. I am not very bright.) And oooh, good call! *tries things*

[identity profile] strobelighted.livejournal.com 2010-11-27 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Firefox has been doing some weird things for me lately, so perhaps it's that. Have you tried another browser?

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2010-11-27 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
HMMM. Yeah, it works in IE and Safari. GRRRRRR, FIREFOX. >:(

[identity profile] doctoraicha.livejournal.com 2010-11-27 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Clear the cache and your browsing history. ALL of it, including stored passwords and stuff.

2. Run MalwareBytes' Antimalware, just in case. (It's free.)

3. Run a disk cleanup (system restore)

4. Run an analsys to see whether you need to defrag the harddrive.

5. Reset your internet security to "medium" factory settings, in case something is wrong.

6. Call me and I'll walk you through it. I will not leave you on hold, lol.

Dude, you're a genius. I forgot about the cache and history stuff - I just cleared it and BOOM. Instant results. THANK YOU, DOCTOR. *g*
