Film, film, film...

So, I'm seeing PoA tonight, and I've been hearing a lot of squeeeeing over it, as well as such reviews as "it sucked." I'll reserve my judgment till later today, BUT I did want to say something, just 'cause it came to mind, and I'm in the mood for verbal diarrhea:

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter what the movies are like, right? Because the books are the original canon, they are what they are, and nothing can take that away from them. No matter how many people may now write fic with mustache!Lupin, or whatever else happened in the film (Steve Kloves actually saying Lupin was "in love with Lily in many ways"? *raises sceptical eyebrow*), the books - and our interpretation of them - are free to go on as they had before. I mean, shit. It's just a fucking movie.

This, you understand, is my way of living in denial, but I also do think it's true. They're just adaptations. The books are the actual THING.

On a totally different note, I am now determined to work out every day, dammit. I'm tired of being out of shape. And losing to my friend in wrestling...

In what way are you in denial? A film based on a novel is one interpretation, in the same way that a performance of a stage play is one interpretation of the play itself. It's fun to watch and compare the director's vision with one's own, but there's no need to froth over it. 20 years from now some other director might remake the HP films and do them entirely differently.

Of course it matters what the movies are like--in the best of all possible worlds, we'd prefer them not to suck, right? If they don't suck, it might encourage the remaining 2 children on earth (or whatever) who haven't yet read the books to head for their local library. Or bookstore. Not that JKR needs to get any richer at this point.

That said, enjoy the show. XD

In denial that if the movie sucks (which I don't know that it does - haven't seen it yet), it will somehow impact the books. That's all. But in the end, what I really enjoy is the book, not the movie, so it shouldn't matter. I'm just preparing myself for the worst, because the first two films made me upset.

Not that JKR needs to get any richer at this point.

But another free lunch here and there might not hurt. *g*

Thank you!

I don't think you're in denial either. :) I mean, yeah, it'd be more fun if they were good. But if they're bad, well, that doesn't change the books at all, so... we've not really lost anything.

And I now have an image of you as a badass wrestler, and it amuses me muchly. Hee.

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2004-06-06 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, me as a bad-ass wrestler. Right now I just look like an ant trying to crawl up dog's leg, or something. That should amuse you for a while. *g*

Face it, you're going to be scarred for life. *g*

LOL. *bitch-slaps*

;)

You know what, bugger that for a lark, because some of us had planned on experimenting with movie-based fanfic. I'm glad you took the time to demean it and pigeonhole it all in the category of "really bad fanfiction that is totally not canon in any way" like half the other people I've seen today.

Apparently, our interpretations are just fine, so long as they aren't based on other people's interpretations.

I may as well resign myself to having a coffee and infusing the fandom with clary sage-scented evil, via moviefic.

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2004-06-06 09:49 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't mean that - all I said was that that's how I feel, Houie! It doesn't... Oh, nevermind. I feel like you just aren't listening to me, while I'm trying to explain something totally different. I don't know understand WHY you aren't listening, but...

Look. We all have different opinions. This is mine. That's ALL. I'm not trying to rain on anybody's parade! I'm trying to work things out for MYSELF, not for anybody else. If it sounds like that, then I'm sorry, but there was no hidden meaning it, nothing to say "you're all stupid and I think you suck." Absolutely nothing. If I post something in my journal, it doesn't mean it goes for everybody else.

On a more personal note, why are you doing this? Why are you getting so upset with me? I don't understand.

[identity profile] percy-weatherby.livejournal.com 2004-06-06 09:56 am (UTC)(link)
Who am I doing what? I'm not doing anything, as far as I see it, and I'm not upset with anyone. Am I generally annoyed by the general miasma of the Livejournal landscape right now? Yes. Am I upset with a specific person? No, not really.

I'm just not at all fond of miasma. It's like telling yourself you're only going to have one chocolate, and then finding out that it was a coconut one.

Good attitude to go into, but I don't think it's denial totally. Just common sense. Why subject yourself to something that you know that you're going to hate because you're just thinking "canoncanoncanon" throughout the entire thing. It's better to view it as a movie.

[identity profile] mrsronweasley.livejournal.com 2004-06-06 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. :)

[identity profile] sakuraigirl.livejournal.com 2004-06-06 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'm quite amused by how uptight people get. You're exactly right, it's just a damn movie. And in the end, it really only matters if one person is pleased with how the movies turn out and it's Jo Rowling. If she's happy with what the director has done and doesn't have a problem with the ommisions or changes, everyone else should just deal and RELAX!!

[identity profile] simster.livejournal.com 2004-06-06 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, in the end, everything is interpretation. Nothing is truly canon, I think, even though we've all used the "it's canon" argument to validate our ships or opinions of the text at one point or another. Like your friend Jamie O. said, it's the individual reader who has ultimate authority. So certainly your interpretation is free to carry on. I wouldn't call it denial at all -- that is, unless of course you ship H/H. Talk about denial. hehe ;)

I just decided to skip the film because I always felt I lost more than I gained from watching it.

Not reading comments; have not seen film yet and will not get to for quite some time. I just wanted to say: you do know about this (http://fakeamerica.com/lo/), right?

I don't think it's necessarily anything romantic between Lily and Lupin. From the movie, it comes across more as Lily being an exceptionally true and faithful friend to someone - which might be Lupin, but then again, maybe not - and Lupin hasn't forgotten it one bit.

It could be a lot of things - perhaps Lily stuck her neck out to speak up and help protect Lupin after the Shrieking Shack incident, and/or convinced Snape not to go public after it. Maybe she helped Sirius after he left home at 16 even though he was a git at that age and Lupin feels particularly ripped apart by how Sirius betrayed Lily, James and Harry to Voldemort (or so Lupin thought at the time). It could be a lot of things, especially if that part happens to be one of the bits that betrays a kernel of info to be released in one of the later books. We just can't know for sure.
