Film, film, film...

So, I'm seeing PoA tonight, and I've been hearing a lot of squeeeeing over it, as well as such reviews as "it sucked." I'll reserve my judgment till later today, BUT I did want to say something, just 'cause it came to mind, and I'm in the mood for verbal diarrhea:

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter what the movies are like, right? Because the books are the original canon, they are what they are, and nothing can take that away from them. No matter how many people may now write fic with mustache!Lupin, or whatever else happened in the film (Steve Kloves actually saying Lupin was "in love with Lily in many ways"? *raises sceptical eyebrow*), the books - and our interpretation of them - are free to go on as they had before. I mean, shit. It's just a fucking movie.

This, you understand, is my way of living in denial, but I also do think it's true. They're just adaptations. The books are the actual THING.

On a totally different note, I am now determined to work out every day, dammit. I'm tired of being out of shape. And losing to my friend in wrestling...

In what way are you in denial? A film based on a novel is one interpretation, in the same way that a performance of a stage play is one interpretation of the play itself. It's fun to watch and compare the director's vision with one's own, but there's no need to froth over it. 20 years from now some other director might remake the HP films and do them entirely differently.

Of course it matters what the movies are like--in the best of all possible worlds, we'd prefer them not to suck, right? If they don't suck, it might encourage the remaining 2 children on earth (or whatever) who haven't yet read the books to head for their local library. Or bookstore. Not that JKR needs to get any richer at this point.

That said, enjoy the show. XD

In denial that if the movie sucks (which I don't know that it does - haven't seen it yet), it will somehow impact the books. That's all. But in the end, what I really enjoy is the book, not the movie, so it shouldn't matter. I'm just preparing myself for the worst, because the first two films made me upset.

Not that JKR needs to get any richer at this point.

But another free lunch here and there might not hurt. *g*

Thank you!
