now I know my OTPs...
Ahhh, I'm trying to catch up on comments, I am! I'm failing a bit? *flails*
But I wanted to throw this out there, since it's been brewing in my head for a while.
OTPs.
In fandom, I've had two big OTPs, and I think I've been spoiled by them, especially when it comes to Ray/Fraser. Watching SGA has been interesting, because I expected something that I haven't quite gotten (yet), in terms of pairings. More than anything, this show is very gen. Even when they're trying to sex it up a bit, it's still gen. Sheppard/Weir is a non-pairing, because there's no chemistry. In fact, as somebody pointed out, there's more chemistry between Sheppard and that mannequin he was (gayly) leaning on, than there is between Sheppard/anybody. (Although, Ronon has enough chemistry to make up for the entire show. I'm pretty sure he IS the SGA sex drive. He's like the id with dreads, or something.) So it's an interesting exercise in how much you see vs. how much you interpret.
Up until a certain point, I was monofannish to the nth degree. Harry Potter, for years and years. Now, I've become open to a lot more fandoms, but I'm still monofannish in a way where I care only about maybe two at most. So, I'm used to a certain kind of dynamic, a certain...willingness of canon to play up to my sick and twisted fantasies.
Remus and Sirius:
Okay. They were easy. They were almost as easy as Ray and Fraser. Nothing but them made any sense to me. I read fics where they were paired up with original female characters, and as much as I loved both R and S, I didn't feel anything in those fics at all. Not until I stumbled on "Boys' Own Camping Adventure" and my head went, ding ding ding! THERE. THAT is what makes sense. THAT is what this is all about. Remus and Sirius. Together.
So, for years, I was immersed in this pairing, knowing that my hopes would most likely be dashed when the fifth book came out. But the pairing made so much sense, and then the fifth book came out, and through the whole thing, it was them, holy shit, it was them. And then, well, there was one. Which...I guess I lived with, until book six and Tonks tugging on Remus's robes like a 12-year-old and I was so disappointed, I'm still kind of bitter. Because it was a hell of a lot more interesting when Tonks was a baby dyke (come on, you know it) and Remus had lost his best friend and lover.
Hey, there are all sorts of arguments: it's a kid's book, there won't be any gay! Or, it isn't necessary! But this is something else entirely, and I'll argue it all till the cows come home, so I'll just leave it here and now. I still think that Remus/Sirius was the best pairing in the whole damn book, the most promising, compelling, and (up through book 4) the most satisfying. I still have such love for them, I can't even tell you. They are my first OTP and hey, you never forget your first OTP. *g*
Ray and Fraser:
The OTP that spoils you for every other OTP out there. Now, this pairing is nearly canon. Sometimes, there is no other way to see this show. I mean, even non-fandom people watch it, look at you, and go: "...um? Really?" There is no other way to interpret it, not scenes like the hospital in CotW. Throughout seasons 3 and 4, we get the growth of their relationship, we watch their friendship evolve, we watch them grow attached and worried, we watch them pretty much fall in love. Paul Gross knew about slash, he knew about due South slash, and so this can't really be a coincidence. Not entirely.
Ray? Ray is in love with Fraser definitely by the middle of season 4. At the latest. He may not even realize it yet, but he is, and the audience knows it. The parallels between MotB and CotW, with Fraser asking Ray in MotB "so, are we still?.." and Ray nodding, "I think so," and then Ray finally finding that word in CoTW, "so are we still partners, then?" and Fraser saying, "if you'll have me." I mean. Just. *flails*
And the ending? Is the ultimate OTP ending of any show, ever. Come on. A slash fangirl's dream.
Two men, one dog sled, a sunrise, and "...we'll let you know."
THAT'S THE ENDING. They ride off together, on an adventure, leaving everything they've had before behind. Fraser's coming home, and Ray is coming with him. Sure, Ray could very well have gone back home after the adventure, and they may have had manly talks by the fire and no tent sex of any kind at all, but the point is, if ever we wanted a happy slash ending, they are it, because there is nothing stopping us from believing it, no further canon to distract and scare and whatnot. It's fantastic.
So, can you see where this is headed?
John and Rodney:
See, this is where I get to the problem, because, unlike people who've been in numerous fandoms where a slash pairing is...maybe not hard to find, but hard to exrapolate or work around, I've only been involved with fandoms where the OTP is nearly canon. For many people, the opposite is totally fine: people may not care about the canon so much. Which is totally, totally valid.
I guess what it is, for me personally, it's that I really have been spoiled, because I want to believe in McShep! I do! I like it, I love the idea of it (The Geek and the Flyboy). But I wish that we'd get more in canon. I'm looking forward to seeing the second half of season 2, and my computer's working on a torrent of season 3 already, but. But. This is a bit harder. This is where fanfiction comes in, entirely, because not only does it fill those holes, it provides a more interesting point of view. It's a gen show in that way where, every now and then, John will make out with an alien space babe, and then leave them. He kisses Teyla when under the influence. Rodney kisses Carson when posessed with a second conscience. (But hey, canonical boy!kissing! Yay!) Every once in a while, John and Elizabeth will look deeply into each other's eyes, but you can tell even the actors aren't buying it, so that fizzles out before it begins.
So, I am totally enjoying the fic (where it isn't just aliens making them do it), and loving canon (fun romp! things blowing up! Ronon's sex appeal! John's various woobie faces and crotch! Rodney's maniacal energy and utter dorkiness! The friendships! - all of these things are wonderful and they're total escapism for me that I really need right now), but I want that thread that connects the fanon and canon together more. But I am totally willing to suspend disbelief, because it's more fun that way.
And then, there are moments where you can't interpret it any other way. At this point, I am actually willing to believe that Rodney has a definite thing for John. I mean, his face whenever he thinks John might be dead or in some SERIOUS trouble. The things he's willing to do for him, the lengths he'll go to to save him - they make my little heart melt. (They've gotten into the habit of saying each other lives, and now it's Rodney's turn. Rodney actually said that. How adorable??)
But John is harder. John is a lot more unreadable, in any situation, and I am totally willing to believe the fics where they're fucking, but so deep in the closet, nobody ever even suspects. That works, and it doesn't jar with canon all that much, either. But it's still...I've been spoiled. But I'm working on that. *g*
(Also, they've just started calling each other by first name in canon, and have been doing it for a few episodes, and that's cute. But there's also the John/Ronon thing? Which is just hot. I hope Vonnie forgives me straying. 'Cause. HOT.)
In conclusion, I want more gay on TV? I need to be more flexible?
Hmmm!
(On a totally unrelated note, this morning I was listening to "Million $ Moment" and made a whole SGA vid to it in my head. *claws at brain* Make it stoooooop!)
None of this is meant to offend anyone's fandoms/otp's/anything at all! It's just my rambling on a Friday morning.
ETA: Hey, check out
soupytwist being really smart!
And, okay. Rodney has never called John "John." *awaits*
Another ETA.
Also, wanted to say that this is all just talk of a new person, and I realize that it may come off sounding like I'm all, "my fandom's better than yours" which is not at ALL what I meant to say, at all. I was just thinking out loud. So, um. Keep that in mind. I think SGA is awesome and fun. *slinks off*

It's definitely a show where you have to work for it; like, it was never going to be due South because it's a mainstream family sci-fi show, and the canon will always be slightly more about the explosions and the adventures than the people and their dynamics. Which in some ways is good - cause yay, fanfic and LOTS of room for it! - but yeah, it does get a bit frustrating after canons of gay love.
I do disagree with you about John and Rodney, though. :D Rodney is the world's most obvious guy, in a lot of ways - there are also ways he's not, things you won't find out about him unless you're in very specific circumstances, but we the viewers have seen him in a lot of those very specific circumstances, and when he is, those things just come tumbling out. He's not spewing every scientific secret ever, but when it comes to hiding stuff about his personality and what he's like he mostly sucks. (I think this is one possible reason for the bravado and bitching - if he's bitching, he doesn't have to talk about more revealing things.) And his hots for Sam Carter and the girl on the Brotherhood planet read very true to me, and I think there's enough canon to extrapolate that he probably has slight crushes on Teyla and Ronon as well, it's just that his respect for them is winning out. :) And then there's his huge, obvious crush on John, which is lovely. I love my slightly gay neurotic genius Canadian scientists. :D
John, though... John hides everything. He's all surface, and we only get just enough to see there's depths there somewhere. I don't know if it's intentional or just something Joe Flanigan brings, but his reactions are really... weird.
And I really think the most obvious explanation for that is that John is gay. Well, I mean, there are the fics where it turns out he was a robot or posessed by an Ancient or a pcyhopathic serial killer or actually the Martian Manhunter (from the Justice League, and his name really is J'onn. hee. that idea is my favourite - it's so cool and TOTALLY EXPLAINS EVERYTHING, ahah), but I like the gay theory better. :) I mean, obviously you don't become that kind of weird just cause you're gay (I want more John backstory now please), but saying it has a gay element explains the specific times when his reactions seem normal - his "i've never dated a woman from another planet!" to Chaya, which doesn't fit with John The Space
SlutHero at all, or his totally going googly-eyed over Ronon, and even more especially, his reactions to Rodney. Rodney is, like, the only person John really reacts like a typical person to, with whom he doesn't seem to have eighty bazillion barriers. Whether they meant to or not, I really think they've set up a show where John and Rodney are basically the only people who could cope with each other. John knows Rodney well enough to get when he's blustering and when he's not, and he has enough surface layers to stop any of it hurting. And equally, he needs Rodney's forcefulness to get through those layers, actually see through his bullshit and call him on it (which again, Rodney won't be hurt by but lots of people would). I think it's beautiful. :D... wow, that was a long comment. Hi! I love you! I am possibly slightly caffeinated! (although this does not excuse the pretention, for which I apologise. I'm somehow stuck in annoying essay mode right now. it's a problem. omg.) Anyway, what I really meant was that I totally think SGA is just as OTP, just not so much in the text - it's not quite so much on our screens every week, but I do think it's there.
*hugs you hard*

I actually have very little doubt that John is gay. Anna and I were just talking about that yesterday. He is gay, gay, gay. This I have no problem with. It's more...how he reacts to Rodney, in particular. He IS an extraordinarily closed-off person, and I actually love the way Joe Flanigan plays him. So much of him is in how he looks, what he doesn't show, not what he says/doesn't say. It's fascinating. (Sometimes that's attributed to his acting skills, but having watched 1.5 seasons now, I disagree. I think it IS Joe Flanigan making the characters a lot more interesting than he was meant to be, kind of like Callum taking Ray and RUNNING with him.) He never shares much. He doesn't say much. We don't know anything about him, really - I mean, we know his military record, we know what he believes in, because he shows it by his actions, but he isn't exactly a sharing type of guy.
I can definitely buy the dynamic between him and Rodney being that of two people that are somewhat united in that otherness that other people might not get.
So, um. Hmmm. I will keep all these things in mind when watching more, and I want to know more, so I will keep on talking to you and Vonnie and Anna and whatnot about it for a while. *g*
(Your thoughts on Rodney are making me like Rodney a lot more. Which is helpful! :D)
no subject
I started off thinking Rodney was more obviously gay, but the more I thought about it, the gayer John got. Dude is just... gay.
And hmm, you don't find his reactions with Rodney very much like he has a kind of unwilling crush but ends up really liking Rodney anyway? I guess that does become more obvious - to me anyway - as you go along... there's a few eps in particular where duuuude. Though maybe I find that easier to believe cause I would totally have a crush on Rodney if I were in John's place, with his enormous brain and the heart that he wants to pretend he doesn't have but totally can't and his reluctant bravery and accidental sweetness. Though he'd also probably drive me nuts, so. :D
And YES to the dynamic between him and Rodney being that of two people that are somewhat united in that otherness that other people might not get - they are very ray and Fraser, only for me Rodney's Ray and John is Fraser. :D And, y'know, with less opportunity to run off to snowy Canadian heaven together. :)
no subject
I guess that does become more obvious - to me anyway - as you go along... there's a few eps in particular where duuuude.
Okay, now, give me examples. I want to know. :D
Also, see, I want to smack Rodney a lot sometimes, so it's more of a personal thing. I LIKE him, I do, and when he goes all heart-breaky on us, I melt, but sometimes? Really? I want to beat him up. (Though I get all defensive when Ronon makes fun of him. *blushes*)

I know, I know, I am so bad and wrong and an unbeliever because I Do Not See the Light of the fandom that ate fandom. But I am waiting it out. It will stop eating fandom eventually and spit it out again, and Fraser and Ray will Still Be Here.

But also, maybe I'm still mad at it for eating fandom, you know... :) Like I said, I'm politically incorrect, and I'm bad, and everything. *hangs head*

And, post is interesting, a nd I don't really have anything much coherent to say, other than: after U2 and dS? Yeah, having to work for it in SGA was kinda weird, but it sort of sneaks up and ambushes you, I've found. And, uh, my tendency to see everything through fic-stained glasses tends to help out there. :D
And, uh, I too can totally stray into John/Ronon when given compelling stories with which to do so, so, uh, you wouldn't be the only one who Vonnie makes sad-face at? :D Like, for instance, Lalejandra's publishing AU (which makes me gleeful and squishy all over).

Ray and Fraser? There are no words.
No, wait. There are PLENTY of words, but none that are necessary to convince anyone paying the tiniest bit of attention that THIS IS CANON. There are ENTIRE EPISODES devoted to them, And not just COTW or MOTB. Eclipse? Asylum? BDtH? Whole hours about love and UST and attraction and loyalty and desperation that were pretty much done deliberately.

Because characters are usually so obvious. There's The Hero. And The Girl. And The Sidekick. Very rarely is there The Bitchy Scientist Who Really Says What We're All Thinking. And I love that! Maybe it's that part of my personality that is fed up of me being too nice all the time.
Because Rodney is not used to being appreciated. The only thing that ever got him any attention was his brain. He's smart. He can do things that other people can't. So much of his self esteem is wrapped up in his brain that he doesn't see the other parts of himself that are great. And so many people see being athletic or handsome as better things. They're definitely more obvious things.
So Rodney started telling people about how clever he is. Look how smart I am! How intelligent! Look how I saved your life, not the brawn, but me, the brain! So he regales us with tales of his brain and belittles everyone elses brain because he needs to have some way of getting love.
But it backfires most of the time. People get irritated by him and don't like being called stupid and they drift from him. So he feels the need to point it out more. A constant circle where Rodney pushes more and more people away.
But that's why I love him and why I love McShep. Because you can see from the pilot that John is amused by Rodney. Boom - he doesn't back off from Rodney's brash boasting, he steps up to the plate and leaves Rodney almost speechless that the handsome, athletic Major has brains. Then John picks Rodney to be on his team. It makes sense for the show, but from a character perspective it's an unusual choice that pays off.
It's not for nothing that you see how the people who like Rodney best are the ones forced into spending time with him - i.e. his team. And John seems to embrace that. He doesn't let Rodney's comments phase him - he gives it back. He's used to people fawning over him for his brawn and good looks. But now there's someone who thinks he's amazing because of him brain.
And yes - as Katie said it, Rodney will just steam-roller over John's need to hide himself. Barging into his quarters to talk which eventually ends up with him being more than happy to have Rodney in his quarters to talk. (And no - I'm not just talking fic - this is canon!)
I know that McShep needs more work theoretically than Due South but because we're playing with what we're given the potential for meta is so much greater. See above for proof!
And finally, I love Rodney because even though he's so loud and brash, when he does the heroic thing he says nothing at all. He walks into the black cloud, he wants to be out there with John, fighting. He does the space-walk and will get into the VR-pod.
And I love you too xx

So? Really? I give friends joint presents with other friends so that we can afford to get them something awesome. Does that make us lovers? No.
If there's a slash ship in HP, it's Harry and Ron. Not THAT has a lot of evidence.
