On Stalking and Being a Lightweight.
Oct. 5th, 2002 10:55 amWell, 'tis the weekend. Which is good, because I still don't have an alarm clock, and can sleep till whenever without worrying about when I have to get up. Which I did. Well, until 10, anyway.
Well, went to the International Student Welcome Party (still feels weird that I'm the international student, not the ones with the British accent). It was...entertaining, let's just say that.
Actually, the most entertaining part I am sort of ashamed of. No, before you get any bad, bad ideas in your heads (stop it, Anna, I know what you're thinking!), it has little to do with what I did.
Allow me to explain.
When we got there (Marie, Theresa and I, who else?), we had to get name badges (I hate those), and right in front of us there were these two guys. They had come separately, it seems, and I had seen both of them before. One was from Oregon, from what I gather, the other, I'm not sure where, but damn, I would like to know where they grow them so beautiful. I mean, really beautiful. There are certain faces that you see that just have it. To me, those really beautiful people glow, they just...stand out. He had that face. He had these intense blue eyes (sort of like I imagine Sirius as having), light-brown-almost-blond shaggy hair (Remus!), this great mouth, very...ummm...I don't know, just - trust me. He was gorgeous. The other one was a head taller, also very good-looking (he just didn't seem to glow as the other one did). They were both very pretty.
But I digress.
Like I said, I had noticed both of them before. As in noticed. But as soon as they had written their name badges, they got involved in a conversation (introducing themselves, from what I could gather, since they shook hands). No one else was really privy to it. That's when the first suspicion creeped in.
The evening wore on.
After the Dean had spoken his 'few words', people started mingling, talking, introducing themselves, while we three stood and simply talked to one another. You have to understand - by this point, all you can really talk about with strangers is where you come from, why you're here, and what your major is. I'd like to have a real conversation every once in a while, which is what Marie and Theresa provide, since we already know a lot about one another. So, we stood there, and I saw the two boys still standing where they had been standing, talking to one another. Theresa, knowing that I wanted to look (what?), rotated us so that I was facing them. We all laughed, ha ha ha, it was very amusing, and began to speculate. Normally, at these gatherings, people not only want to meet other people, but they're secretly hoping to get off. Or at least meet a potential person to get off with. Which is when you start seeing girls talking to guys, and vice versa. Those two had plenty of opportunity to talk to girls. They kept standing and talking to one another.
I don't know why, but we became really intrigued. We wanted to see how this would turn out, because the party really wasn't as exciting as it could have been. So, we began to entertain ourselves. Marie thought that yes, they were, in fact, flirting with each other (Marie: 'I'm the only lesbian I know that says 'awwww' when she sees two gay boys together. And only then.') Theresa and I agreed, and 'awwww'ed' at all the appropriate times.
But wait! There's more to this abominable 'people watching' experience!
When they moved towards the drinks, we rotated, so we could see them. For an hour, while we stood there, talking and laughing, we kept watching them. A few girls tried talking to them, and the boys were nice, but the difference between how the taller one looked at the girls as opposed to the boy next to him was rather amusing.
Those girls didn't stand a chance.
After a while, they left. We didn't know where they'd gone, but there were so many people, we didn't even notice when they did. At least not at first.
A little later, we decided to move next door to a pub, which is where most of the party had moved to, and as soon as we walked in, we squealed, because there they were. Still talking to each other, yes, but there were also a few girls surrounding them. (Surprise!) We laughed, Theresa and I got a drink (Smirnoff Ice is way too easy to drink...) and we went back to where Marie was standing. It turned out she was standing right next to them. We had another good laugh.
At some point, the girls that they were talking to must have realized they were hitting a dead end, and went off somewhere else. The two stalkees of ours moved to a different part of the room. Marie noticed some definite 'leaning' on one's part. We giggled.
I was getting tipsy. Very much so, because I am a horrible lightweight. Theresa had to go and have an obligatory chat with the people from her college, while Marie and I talked, occasionally looking to see what our boys were up to. We had a really good coversation, the sort that you want to have, it was honest and interesting, and we found out more about each other, which is always good. We also at some point both said how lucky it was that our college had chosen the other one to go, because if it had been anyone else from there...well, I shudder to think.
And, the, er, climax of the evening came when, after saying goodbye to some girls, our two boys left.
Together.
Marie and I gave each other high-fives. We so wanted them to get together. And I really really hope we weren't wrong.
After that, we talked for a little longer, saw the guy whom Theresa and I met when we were getting to campus, and chatted with him a little bit. Then, we left, still giggling and wishing we could know for sure that we were right. I think we were.
The next morning I was very very ashamed of myself. *sigh*
Yesterday, Marie and I went with the LGBT group on a 'Queer Tour of Brighton', which was basically a pub crawl, where all the pubs happened to be gay (well, for gay people). It was intereseting, but since we were saving our money and not drinking, not as interesting as for a few others.
And that is all the news that's fit to print.
I know. It's fascinating. If you've made it this far, I salute you. My life isn't very exciting, I realize this.
I'm hoping it'll get more so once classes start. Maybe...
